Pregunta 584 - 26 December 2009

We are researching families that lived in the Livermore-Amador Valley before 1900. One of those families descended from James BAGLEY (born 1831 Ireland, died 1861 San Jose) and Maria Elena Aranzazu MESA (born 1840 Alviso, died after 1920). We are very interested in learning more about James BAGLEY and exactly where he lived (believed to be in what is now Milpitas, Calif.), and where he is buried. Also very interested in when and where Maria died and where she is buried. Very willing to share information we have. [Richard Finn (nonmember), Livermore, Calif.]

Pregunta 583 - 22 November 2009

Who were the mother and father of Maria ORTEGA y PACHECO? Maria married Guillermo WEST, son of Mark WEST, in Sonoma County. Maria claimed to be a descendant of Jose Francisco ORTEGA of the Portolá Expedition. I am trying to determine her mother and father. She may have come from Contra Costa County, but was a resident of Sonoma County when she married Guillermo in 1875. Maria was probably born around 1849. [Carol Eber (provisional member), Petaluma, Calif.]

Pregunta 582 - 22 November 2009

I'm trying to make my daughter proud of her background
--something her mother's side of the family does not seem to like to talk about.
I am told she goes back to Don
Jose Marie AMADOR
--I hear that he was a sergeant at the Presidio in Monterey and later at the Presidio in San Francisco. I also heard that his wife was the first school teacher in California and that their son was part of the founding of Mission San Jose. When he retired the Spanish king gave him 17,000± acres in what is now the Amador Valley. Amador County is named after him. Family stories say that he let Irish settle on his land and that is now Dublin, Calif.
The story goes that some gringos bought 100± horses from him. They then came back to say they needed a receipt in English for the Army. He did not speak English but signed it anyway. The receipt was NOT for horses but for his land. He lost his fight in American courts.
His was buried behind the Catholic Church in Gilroy, Calif., by my daughter's great-grandma, who was born in the Castro House. [Dennis Gothot (nonmember), San Martin, Calif.]

Respuesta a Pregunta 582 - 22 November 2009

According to Marie Northrop's Spanish-Mexican Families of Early California: 1769-1850, Vol. I, pp. 31-33: Jose Maria AMADOR was born 18 December 1794 and baptized 20 December at Mission Dolores. His parents were Pedro AMADOR (born about 1739 Cocula, Guadalajara, Mexico) and Maria Ramona NORIEGA (born about 1760 Baja California, Mexico; buried 3 September 1802 Mission Santa Clara). Pedro and Ramona were married in 1777 Baja California. She was his second wife and of "some attainments for her circumstances and time, as she taught all of her eleven children to read and write." Pedro enlisted in August 1765 at Loreto and rose to the rank of sergeant. He was with Portolá's Expedition to Alta California in 1769. Jose Maria AMADOR married (1) May 1818 Maria Magdalena de la Trinidad BERNAL, who died in 1828 in childbirth; they had three children who lived into adulthood and were married. He married (2) 1 May 1829 Josefa Joaquina Rogeria SANCHEZ, who died in 1838; they had five children, at least one of whom married. He married (3) 13 January 1844 Maria Soledad ALVISO; they had 5 children. Northrop has more details of his wives and children; although, she does not mention any being a teacher.
Jose Maria AMADOR was a soldier at the San Francisco Presidio from 1810-27. He was Mayordomo of Mission Santa Clara in 1827. He was granted Rancho San Ramon in 1834 and left valuable memoirs. Amador County was named for him.
Harry Crosby's Gateway to Alta California: The Expedition to San Diego, 1769, p. 144, details Pedro AMADOR'S military service. If the military records show he was in the Spanish Army in Arizona or Alta California during the American Revolution, his male descendants may very well qualify for membership in the Sons of the American Revolution.
As a Californio descendant myself, I take pride in my ancestors' accomplishments and hope your daughter will do the same. [Benita Gray (member), San Diego, Calif.]

Our family, which is AMADOR, also come from the same part of Mexico, by Cocula, Jalisco, Mexico. There is a big AMADOR family in that area. My dad's father was from La Mesa del Cobre, Jalisco. His father was Serafin AMADOR and they had a big family in that whole area of AMADOR
name. [Librado Amador (nonmember), Sunnyvale, Calif.]

Pedro AMADOR was my great-great-great-great-grandfather. Does anyone know who his parents were, if they were from Spain, and if so what part of Spain? [Warren Brunetti (nonmember), Alameda, Calif.]
Respuesta a Pregunta 582 - 7 December 2010
Pedro AMADOR was originally from (the area of) Cocula, Jalisco. Sinforosa AMADOR
--one of the eleven children of Pedro and Ramona--was my matrilineal ancestor. My sister's mtDNA analysis--her contribution to a project conducted by Dr. John Johnson, Curator of Anthropology at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History--showed that Sinforosa (and her mother Ramona) carried mitochondrial DNA mutations belonging to haplogroup A2 (haplotype A26), which means that Ramona (and therefore, Sinforosa) were matrilinearly descended from "Native" Americans, who very probably crossed into North America from Siberia, through Beringia, some 13 thousand years ago.
I have entered an article on Sinforosa AMADOR in Wikipedia. [William K. Boone (nonmember), Mexico City, Mexico]

Looking for any information on the ancestors of Jose Dario ARGUELLO (born about 1753 at Queretaro, Mexico; died about 1827-8 at Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico). Also is he related to Juan de ARGUELLO who joined Cortes' Mexican expedition from Nicaragua? My husband's father was Donald L. ARGUELLO (born 1896 in Santa Clara, Calif.). Thank you. My maternal 5th-great-grandfather is Francisco REYES (born 1747 Zapotlan el Grande, Jalisco, Mexico), a member of the Portolá Expedition and later owner of Rancho Encino y Alcalade of the Pueblo. His wife, Maria Luisa del Carmen DOMINGUEZ, was born 1767 in Villa de Sinaloa. I am also a 4th-generation descendant of the co-owners of Rancho Boca de Santa Monica: 3rd-great-grandparents Francisco Rafael MARQUEZ (born 1798), Maria Roque VALENZUELA (baptized 16 August 1815) and Ysidro REYES (born 16 April 1813 Zapotlan el Grande, Jalisco, Mexico) and his wife Maria Antonia VILLA (born 1820). Of the Rancho Boca children, I know Pascual MARQUEZ (born May 1844) and Maria Micaela de Guadalupe REYES (born 12 December 1852, daughter of my great-grandmother Felipa MARQUEZ, who was born 8 May 1874 and married Eusebio M. CARRILLO (born 1865) on 18 February 1894. I located Eusebio M. CARRILLO'S parents: Eusebio CARRILLO (born 1831) and Francisca MARTINEZ (born 1843) and the marriage information on their 3 November 1859 ceremony at the San Salvador de Jurupa Church in San Bernardino but need help with information on my 3rd-great-grandparents: Jose Maria CARRILLO and Brigida CORAGA and Evaristo MARTINEZ and Aurora GARCIA as noted in the Catholic Church records. It is believed the Italian priest Jose Oneto misspelled the names "CARIO" and "CORAGA."  Any additional information on my CARRILLO, CORAGA y  MARTINEZ, GARCIA families would be greatly appreciated. Pregunta 578 - 29 October 2009

I am trying to locate brothers and sisters, if any, of Maria Camila GALINDO, daughter of Juan Bautista GALINDO and Maria Rita Alvina TAPIA. She was born 6 July 1843 and baptized at Santa Clara Mission 29 July 1843 (Santa Clara Book II,1804-1843, No. 332, page 84). I do not know the marriage date of her union with Ramon VIVAL or the location. Maria and Ramon along with their son were buried at San Gabriel Mission and the records for 1900–1910 were said to be stolen. My father and I tried to locate the graves. But we could not locate them as it appears that a fence and a road had been constructed in the same location as the graves. I will be grateful for any help you can give me. I have been looking for information since the 1960s. Sincerely, [Helen Vidal Humphreys (member), Costa Mesa, Calif.]

Respuesta a Pregunta 578 - 15 February 2010
The Huntington Missions database shows the following christenings and burials of children of Juan Bautista GALINDO and Albina MORENO at the Santa Clara Mission: Sebastián, born 20 January 1841, christened 27 January, buried 19 March 1841; Francisco Javier, born 4 December 1841, christened the same day; Nicolasa del Refugio, born 10 July 1845, christened 13 July; María Celedonia Marcelina, born 26 September 1847, christened 29 September. There is a 1900 census record in San Diego for María GALINDO, mother of 15 children, 4 living. Also a burial record for María GALINDO, wife/widow of Ramón VIDAL (born August 1839, Sonora) 5 July 1904, Calvary Cemetery, San Diego. [Rondi Frankel (nonmember), Mexico City, Mexico]

Pregunta 577 - 29 October 2009

I have been working on my son-in-law Wilton Martin WOOD'S Spanish genealogy for 2 years. His mother was Margaret TICO. I am trying to locate the correct wife and her parents, for Wil's ancestor, Jose de Jesus Maria TICO, who married a Maria Jesus PERALTA (it may be Maria Jesus Josefa PERALTA). Jose TICO was born 01 February 1839 and baptized at the Santa Barbara, Calif., mission. Jose TICO was married to Maria PERALTA 21 August 1865 at Mission San Buena Ventura, now in Ventura Co., Calif. Jose TICO'S father was Fernando TICO, his mother (Fernando's 2nd wife) was Maria de Jesus Silvestra ORTEGA. Fernando's parents were Joaquin TICO & Juana Maria CARRERA. Maria Silvestra ORTEGA'S parents were Juan Capistrano Martin ORTEGA & Maria Josefa Rafaela ARELLANES. Maria Silvestra ORTEGA'S  grandfather was Sgt. Jose Francisco ORTEGA who was with Gaspar Portolá's party when they discovered San Francisco Bay. Sgt. Jose Francisco ORTEGA'S wife was Maria Antonia Victoria CARRILLO. Thank you for your help. [Beverly Nickerson (nonmember), Oceanside, Calif.]
Pregunta 577 UPDATE -- 2 February 2010

I do not have much information about Jose Francisca ORTEGA'S father, except that his name was Francisco ORTEGA, born about 1710 in Castillo, Spain, and that Jose Francisco ORTEGA'S  mother was a Maria Magdalena Francisco GUERRA (later the name was changed to de LA GUERRA). This Maria Magdalena Francisca GUERRA was born about 1715 in Spain.
I do not know if she was an ancestor branch of the famous de LA GUERRA family of Santa Barbara, but have hints that the families might have known each other earlier in Spain and certainly knew each other in Santa Barbara. Jose Francisco ORTEGA, who was the first Comandante of Presidio Santa Barbara, retired to the Santa Barbara area and had an adobe and property in Refugio just north of Goleta, Calif., which became Rancho Refugio. The de LA GUERRA family also came to Santa Barbara. In the article "The Pioneers And Their Descendants" (no author), "It is generally conceded that the leading Spanish family of Santa Barbara has been that of de LA GUERRA."  "Don Jose de LA GUERRA y NORIEGA was born in 1776, at Novales, Santander, Spain. In 1804, he married Dona Maria Antonio CARRILLO, daughter of Don Raymundo CARRILLO of Santa Barbara (who was the brother of Maria Antonia Victoria CARRILLO who married Sgt. Jose Francisco ORTEGA). Don CARRILLO was also a Comandante of the Presidio Santa Barbara. I hope some of your readers might also have additional information on Sgt. Jose Francisco ORTEGA'S mother and her family.

Searching for info on my great-grandparents Antonio and Juana Mario Olivera BERMUDEZ (born 1845). They lived in the Santa Margarita area, County of San Luis Obispo. They had 7 children, one of which was my great-grandfather Antonio Secundino BERMUDEZ and daughter Ramona. Juana remarried a Mariano BONILLA and possibly again to a man named CERITTO. Pregunta 575 - 8 October 2009

I recently had my mitochondrial DNA tested, and as I expected it came back as Native American
--which tribes would be  living in the area near Loreto in Baja California at the time (about 1761) of my great-great-great-great-grandmother, Maria Lugarda SALGADO? [Mary Ryan (member), San Francisco, Calif.]
Respuesta a Pregunta 575 - 5 January 2010
I found a website that says two tribes of natives near Loreto were the Cochimi and the Guaycura (also spelled Guaicura and Waicuri): http://www.houstonculture.org/mexico/baja.html.
Hopefully more specific maps will soon be available showing the distribution of the Amerinid haplogroups as more people test and report. Good sites so far are National Geographic and Genealogy of Mexico: https://genographic.nationalgeographic.com/genographic/index.html

Can anyone tell me if Maria Apolinaria ONTIVEROS born about 1802 was a Gabrielino Indian? [Carlos Contreras (nonmember), Palmdale, Calif.]
Respuesta a Pregunta 574 - 20 September 2009
According to San Gabriel Mission records:
#1584 a Maria Apolinaria ONTIVEROS who married Manuel Antonio DUARTE on 5 August 1821 was the daughter of Patricio ONTIVEROS and Maria Antonia RODRIGUEZ, residents of the Rancho de Santa Gertrudis. Patricio was a retired soldier.
#508 Juan Patrico ONTIVEROS (age 22) married Maria Antonia RODRIGUEZ (age 14) on 1 June 1794. He was a single soldier from the Presidio of San Diego and the son of Jose ONTIVEROS and Anna Maria CARRASCO, originally of Chametla, the jurisdiction of Rosario, Sinaloa, (in what is now Mexico). She was the daughter of Pablo RODRIGUEZ and Maria Rosalia NORIEGA, of Real de Santa Rosa, Durango, (in what is now Mexico) and settlers of the Pueblo of Los Angeles.
Of course there could be more than one Maria Apolinaria ONTIVEROS born about 1802. [Benita Gray (member), San Diego, Calif.]

Pregunta 571 - 13 September 2009

Might anyone have a list of the children of Maria Monica de la Luz ROMERO and Ignacio ORTEGA? They married in 1838 in San Gabriel, Calif. I'm trying to confirm they were my great-great-grandfather's, Gregorio ORTEGA'S, parents. That information was given to my uncle by the granddaughter of Gregorio. I didn't find anything in the California census or Marie Northrop's books. Anything would be of some help. I found a Jose ORTEGA, 13, in the 1860 Santa Barbara census. I think this is him. Thank you!! [Marta Melendez (nonmember), Ventura, Calif.]

My husband is also a great-great-grandchild of Gregorio ORTEGA. Gregorio married Maria Antonia Regina ESQUIVEL and they had 18 children. My husband is the great-grandson of Gregorio's daughter, Genevieve Virginia ORTEGA. Gregorio was born in 1848 in Los Angeles, California and we do have information about his siblings. We have been studying our family tree which is extensive and we have information dating back to the days of the original soldados serving under Jose Francisco de ORTEGA as well as information of the descendants of Gregorio's wife Regina. You have a very rich and interesting family history. We would be happy to share what we have. Do you still have the name of the grandchild that your uncle was in contact with? We would love to speak with anyone who has information about Gregorio's children and grandchildren. Please feel free to contact us by e-mail bruinwald@yahoo.com and we will be happy to provide our telephone number. [Deborah Acosta (nonmember), Canon City, Colo.]

Respuesta a Pregunta 571 - 5 January 2010
Regretfully, I have to state that the Gregorio ORTEGA who married Regina ESQUIVEL was not a descendant of the California ORTEGAS. He was born in Southern Mexico as indicated by his death record dated  22/23 February 1916 (County of Ventura), which I have attached to this email. The names of his parents are not given, nor is his state of birth, but it says he had lived in California for 55 years, but was born in "Southern Mexico."  Gregorio ORTEGA'S wife, Regina, however, was descended from an illustrious group of pobladores and Californios:

    • Great-Great-Granddaughter of Juan Matias OLIVAS (soldado)
    • Great-Great-Granddaughter of Jose Rosalino FERNANDEZ (soldado)
    • Great-Great-Granddaughter of Pedro Gabriel VALENZUELA (soldado)
    • Great-Great-Granddaughter of Anastacio FELIZ (soldado)
    • Great-Great-Great-Granddaughter of Luis QUINTERO (poblador)

I researched this family thoroughly 11 years ago and had originally tried to link Gregorio up to the "other ORTEGA'S," but it never happened. Everything points to Mexico. But Regina has a very fascinating California background, while Gregorio states in every census between 1870 and 1910 that he was a native of Mexico, and his naturalization is recorded in Ventura County as follows: "Gregorio ORTEGA, Mexico, 23 Jul 1877, 2:31(M):338 Octaviano Morago/Guadalupe

I am seeking information about the Workman-Rowland Party of '41 and if there was such a person named Billy PERDEW in that party. If so, then he had to have been a trapper in New Mexico. But where was he from? Also, I think that Billy PERDEW fathered out of wedlock a son to Nieves ROWLAND, the daughter of John ROWLAND.  The child, William PERDEW, born 5 September 1846 in Puente, California, was my great-grandfather. In short, I'm trying to verify a link to John ROWLAND through a child born to Nieves ROWLAND and Billy PERDEW. [Robert Lindeboom (nonmember), Calif.]

According to my family records I have a great-grandfather with the name Julian William Reed PERDEW who was born 5 September 1848 or 1849 and was raised by the Rowland family, more specifically Lucille ROWLAND (Nieves' sister). His father, however, was not Billy but Josef. Probably not the same William PERDEW, but thought it interesting the relation to the ROWLAND family and the birth dates. Please let me know if there are anymore similarities in our respective family trees.

I'm trying to locate information (parents, place of birth, date of birth, etc.) for Santiago/Santigo QUINTERO/S and his wife Dolores RUIZ, parents to Julian QUINTERO/S. Julian was born in 1824 or 1834 at El Fuerte, Sinaloa, Mexico. Julian married Rita Marie BERMUDEZ/S, daughter of Juan Hilario BERMUDEZ/S and Ana Maria LUGO. Rita was born on 25 June 1824 in San Gabriel, Los Angeles, Calif.
Also, trying to locate information (parents, place of birth, date of birth, etc.) for Perfecto DUARTE and Eugenia SALGADO, parents to Maria Soledad DUARTE, Francisco DUARTE SALGADO, Pedro Eulogio DUARTE SALGADO.  Soledad was born on or around 1831/1832 in Baja/Alta California. Soledad married Jose Antonio VALENZUELA (born on or about 1814 in San Gabriel), son of Jose Antonio VALENZUELA and Maria Josefa Dominga ALBITRE. Pedro Eulogio DUARTE SALGADO married Juliana CASTRO and they had a child named Tomasa DUARTE (born about 1849 at Rancho San Rafael). Tomasa DUARTE married Francisco LOPEZ on 23 March 1873.
Any information on Santiago QUINTERO, Dolores RUIZ, Perfecto DUARTE, and Eugenia SALGADO would be appreciated. They are my daughter's 5th-great-grandparents. Thank you. [C. Castillo (nonmember), Riverside, Calif.]

    Perfecto DUARTE
was the son of Manuel DUARTE and Anselma ORANTES, and a native of Baja California. In 1821 and 1827 he was a soldier in San Vicente. Eugenia SALGADO may have been the daughter of Sgt. Estanislao SALGADO, native of Loreto, and later at San Vicente. Estanislao was probably the son of Loreto soldier Francisco Javier SALGADO, a Portuguese, and María Lucía ALIPAZ. Estanislao's wife was María CAMACHO. Lots of maybes and probablys, I know, but there were very few people in the north of Baja California at that time. [Rondi Frankel (nonmember), Mexico City, Mexico]

I have been trying to find either military records and/or marriage records for Pedro SOTERO (GALLARDO). His name appears as Pedro SOTERO and his wife was Petra Agustina GUTIERREZ. I have the baptism records for two of their sons: 1) Manuel Ygnacio (born 21 October 1760) and George Miguel Maria (born 30 September 1761). Both were baptized in Santa Gertrudis, California. They had 9 children but I have only found the two baptism records. I know he was a military soldier and he served as a "Cabo". He wrote some letters to the Viceroy from Sinaloa in 1767 after he moved there from what the records indicates "Las Californias".  I have been doing my research for over twenty years and I have been stuck at this point. Anyone who has information about them I would really appreciate you share that information with me and the sources where I can find it.
I also have a baptism record for an Indian boy dated 30 de Nov 1775 from the Misión de Santo Domingo, California. The name of the child is Andres and his padrino is Juan Antonio BOTILLER, Soldado de Escolta.
The other document I have is a baptism record for an Indian boy dated 12 de Abril 1784 de la Misión de Santo Domingo, California. The name of the child is Victor and the padrinos are Juan Antonio BOTILLER and his wife Maria Celia COTA.
I suspect that Juan Antonio was a brother of Martina BOTILLER and Antonio was the father of Maria Luisa BOTILLER Y COTA.
Please contact me if you have any information or want to get a copy of the baptism records and the source where I obtained them. [David Rabago Gallardo (nonmember), Tucson, Ariz.]

Soldier Juan Antonio BOTILLER and Celia COTA were indeed the parents of María Luisa BOTILLER. Juan Antonio is recorded as having been born in 1745 at Real de Minas de Baroyeca, Sonora, and Martina in Villa de Sinaloa circa 1736. Juan's father, also Juan, was born near Villa de Sinaloa and was in Loreto, Baja California by 1733. I am a great-granddaughter of Ramon VILLALBA. His daughter, Juana VILLALBA ADAMS, was my grandmother. Ramon was born in 1824 in Real de San Juan de Sonora, Mexico. He was the son of Juan Jose VILLALBA born in 1793 in Sonora, Mexico. His mother was Mercedes LOPEZ also of Sonora, Mexico. The family owned a 400-acre working cattle ranch in Sonora called "Esaville". Ramon & his brother, Rafael, left Mexico at a young age and moved to Carpenteria, Calif., where they purchased the acreage from the sea to the mountain. They named it "Punta del Norte". Pregunta 559 - 2 July 2009

I have been researching my late mother's Mexican family history for some time. My mother was Caroline Louise Beasley MULLINS. Her mother was Bessie GEE, daughter of Caroline (Carolina) and Parley GEE. All three women were born at Los Angeles. Carolina (great-grandmother) is a problem. We don't know her birth surname, nor for that matter, her surname when she died (22 September 1948). Because of this missing piece of information, Calvary Cemetery was unable to offer any information. I was only six at the time, but I remember the funeral.
Other bits of information regarding great-grandmother Carolina:

    1. Her mother was Concepcion, born at the Avila Adobe (presumably the one at Olvera Street, but maybe not).
    2.
Her siblings were Maria (Aunt Mary), Rosa (Aunt Rose), and Juan (Uncle Johnny).
    3. Uncle Johnny is said to have shot a man, and further, his legal expenses forced his father to sell substantial property in Los Angeles.
    4. Among Carolina's married names were WHITE, HYDE, GEE and FLANLEY. She was an enigmatic person, and was never at any family gatherings (other than her own funeral).
I have also been working on possible relationships with the PICO and FORSTER families, mostly due to resemblances to members of those families. My late uncle, Ralph BEASLEY, bore an incredible resemblance to Pio PICO, and my brother has some of that resemblance. Ysadora can be seen in the faces of Carolina and her daughter Bessie. In a departure, a girl that I graduated from Mater Dei High School with, Charlene FORSTER, from the Forster Ranch in San Clemente, always reminded me of Bessie, my grandmother. A yearbook photo of Charlene, seen next to an Easter 1946 photo of my grandmother, shows a startling resemblance (I have long since lost touch with any high school classmates).
I have contacted Calvary Cemetery, been to the Sherman Library in Corona del Mar (a wonderful resource for genealogical research of California families), also the Los Angeles Hall of Records (in Norwalk, where I searched through old handwritten records in the basement), and to the Old Plaza Church (no help at all!), and also the Pico House Hotel, where a knowledgeable docent suggested the Central Library, my next stop. Marie Northrop's book was wonderful, but no help.
If anyone reading this has any information that may help (perhaps the names of the grandchildren of Ysadora PICO FORSTER, or more directly, the offspring of Juan Fernado FORSTER, who lived at Los Angeles, and developed the Forster Block on Main St.), I will be so grateful. I'm running out of leads. Tomorrow I will be searching for a book recommended by a friend who also frequents the Sherman Library. Again, muchas gracias in advance for any information or suggestions.     My name is Carmen Cesena, my family (father, Teodoro Cesena LUCERO; mother, Guadalupe Carrillo Miranda de CESENA), my three brothers, and one sister immigrated to this country in 1958. Albert PICO, one of the last living descendants of Gov. Pio PICO, nephew to Gertrudis PICO (never married), were our sponsors. We lived at Casa Loma Ranch, in San Jacinto (Riverside, Calif.). Albert and his wife (they were separated) had three daughters, Valerie, Margo, and Trudy PICO. He passed away and is buried in Riverside, I believe. Good Luck. [Carmen Cesena (nonmember), Victorville, Calif.]

Pregunta 559 UPDATE - 8 October 2009

Thanks to those kind responders who have helped me with my lengthy research into the ancestry of my late mother, Caroline MULLINS. The enigmatic person whose "very private" life made research difficult, my great-grandmother, Caroline FLANNELLY ( among other names . . . she was oft-married), has until now been the lynchpin I needed to nail down. And now I have. She was one of nine children of John S. WHITE and Concepcion Chona AVILA WHITE. (Los Angeles Times articles spell the name "Conception.")
Concepcion was born 1855 in California, no city given, and lived most of her life in Los Angeles. I still have some questions about this family line. John WHITE was born 1841 in Illinois. My questions arise from a couple of sources. One is that the great-grandmother Caroline passed down that her AVILA mother was related to the LUGOS of Bell Gardens. The other one, two-fold, involves striking resemblances of 2 of my relatives to some well known Californios. A FORSTER (Charlene) that I graduated from high school with (1960) reminded me amazingly of my grandmother Caroline's daughter, Bessie. Additionally, Bessie's son (my uncle) Ralph BEASLEY bore more than a similarity to Gov. Pio PICO. Ralph passed in 1983, long before I became aware of this resemblance to PICO (via on-line photos).
I would appreciate any suggestions that might lead me further in this quest. I am excited about the information on Concepcion (AVILA) and John WHITE, but the above mentioned unrequited searches leave me with a feeling that I have a lot of work to do. Gracias for any helpful directives. Pregunta 559 UPDATE - 30 December 2011

In an article in the Los Angeles Times (Sept. 05, 1895) regarding the "company" established to resolve disposition of the AVILA family estate, there is mention of the children of Antonio AVILA. Ascencion and Concepcion are mentioned, among several others. Is this the great- great-grandmother? Great-grandmother Caroline held that her mother Concepcion was born at the Avila Adobe. My thanks to any responders.       Dau          Louisa MILLS Ca
Son          Alfred Charles MILLS 1876 Ca
Son          Frank R MILLS  1879 Ca
All the California births were in Santa Clara County. Alfred MILLS was captain of the schooner Nellie Carter which was stranded off Nova Scotia 30 August 1906. I don't know if he was on the boat at that time.
Here is the problem, Mary MILLS's name was ALVISO. It is recorded in the family bible as Maria Narcisa Alviso MILLS. Since marrying outside the faith was not popular she was not  buried in the cemetery with the others in the family. One census list her middle name as M. Whatever family of ALVISOS it was had some kind of large land grant.  My mother said at one time there was possibly a bandit in the history but I don't know about that. I do know having discussed with my grandfather and uncle many times that she was an ALVISO. As to where she is buried, I know it was in  Santa Clara County someplace. Any help would be appreciated. Family can be seen in 1870 Santa Clara County census with William A., wife Mary M., and daughter Mary E. at age 1 month: http://www.census-online.com/links/CA/Santa_Clara/
Found date of death for Louisa FORBES in 1942 by searching for father MILLS and mother ALVISO on California death index: http://www.sfgenealogy.net/php/vitals/cadiindex.php

Additional burials at Mission City Memorial Park include M. M. MILLS (male) died 1882 which might be the wife of Alfred MILLS, in error and M. E. MILLS--probably daughter Mary born May 1870, died age 13 yrs and 11 months in April 1884.
If M. M. MILLS died 1882 at age 36 is actually the wife then Family Chart # 81 ALVISO y PACHECO (Dorothy Mutnick: "Some Alta California Pioneers & Descendants 1776-1852") may show Alfred's wife as Maria de Jesus Narcisa born 30 Sept 1846. I've researched AGUAYO, TURNER, ESTRADA, and RUELAS who resided in Azusa and had lots of land there. Isabel's parents were John C. TURNER and Placida RUELAS TURNER. She had a brother named Dionicio and a sister named Mary . . . also half-brothers and sisters. I'd be glad to share if you contact me. Please get in touch with me . . . and we'll se what we can do.     My late friend, David AGUAYO, conducted extensive research and gathered a lot of documentation regarding the AGUAYO family of Azusa. I recall that the name TURNER was included, because he managed to obtain the Los Angeles City street sign for the now defunct Turner Street. Sadly, David passed away a month ago, but if you need information, I can put you in touch with his sister. [Rebecca Madera (nonmember), Alhambra, Calif.]

My great-great-grandparents were Loreto AGUAYO and Guadalupe MESA. The AGUAYOS helped settle Agua Mansa township in Colton. Loreto was a storekeeper who did business with the families of Bandini, Rubidoux, etc. My mother was active in restoring the Agua Mansa Cemetery where many of our relatives are buried. Maybe we can help each other, since one of mom's uncles mentioned he was born in Azusa at his relative's home. chula.mcs@cox.net [Carole Salazar (nonmember), La Mesa, Calif.]

I recently had the opportunity to go to Santa Barbara and do as much research as I could on Jose Calixto (Calisto) AYALA, I have lots of family information on AYALAs tracing back to him. What I am looking for is personal information about Jose Calixto AYALA and where to find it. If my gathered information is correct, it seems he was an 11–13 year-old boy when he came to Santa Barbara. We are having an 80th-birthday for my father, Harry J. AYALA, and would like to gather as much information as possible. Most of my descendants are still in the the area, south to Thousand Oaks. [Carlos Ayala (nonmember), Orem, Utah]

According to Marie Northrop's Spanish-Mexican Families of Early California: 1769-1850, Vol. II, pp. 16-18: Jose Calixto AYALA was born about 1763 at Real de Cozala, Sinaloa, Mexico of Nicolas AYALA and Maria YGNACIA. He married Juana Maria Vitala FELIZ (born about 1773 at Real de Cozala of Juan Victorino FELIZ and Micaela LANDERA; buried 2 August 1840 at Mission Santa Barbara) 3 December 1786 at Santa Barbara Presidio. They had 13 children, all baptized at Mission Santa Barbara. He was a soldier in Anza's 1774 Expedition. Theirs was the first marriage of gente de razon at Mission Santa Barbara. He was invalido (retired) at Santa Barbara in 1832. In 1834 he was a hachero (woodcutter) at Santa Barbara.
According to Richard Whitehead's Citadel on the Channel: "According to the presidio marriage register, the first marriage solemnized at the presidio was performed in the building used as the guardhouse because the (palisade) presidio chapel threatened to collapse."     This states that Jose Calixto was a soldier in Anza's 1774 expedition. If this is true, he would only have been 13–14 years old. I can find nothing in the Anza expedition history to list AYALA'S name. Do you know of such a record? I have been searching for years to find an early record for AYALA. The earliest record I can find for him is his marriage in Santa Barbara. Thanks. [Lorraine Moffat (member), Hesperia, Calif.]

I am looking for information on the YANEZ or PETERS families. Viviana YANEZ was married to Telefilo PETERS and was the sister to my great-great-great-grandmother, Trinidad Silvas YANEZ. Trinidad was married to Remijio YANEZ.  I would like to know who Viviana's and Trinidad's parents were. Remijio YANEZ is the oldest identified grave in the original Pala Indian Cemetery, yet anyone we ask has no idea who he was. I am sure it is do to all the political and money-hungry people out there. This information is wanted strictly for family history as my grandmother and her sisters lived at Pala, but were then orphaned. Later they returned to visit family and friends. But my grandmother and her sisters and my mother passed before we could get all our questions answered. [Lisa White (nonmember), Chula Vista, Calif.]

I'm searching for family information on Jose CASTRO and the connection to the PALMER family. These CASTROs were from San Juan Bautista and I believe Jose was governor during the 1840–1850s era.  Jose had a son, Esteban  CASTRO. I have not found the PALMER connection yet. I believe PALMER may have married into Jose CASTROs family—perhaps a sister to Jose or Esteban? My information is based on a letter Jose CASTRO sent to J.B. I am completing a pictorial history of the mid-Alameda County region for the Arcadia Publishing Series "Images of America," and I would much like to secure an image or line illustration of Barbara Castro SOTO. Her brother was Guillermo CASTRO and her husband was Francisco SOTO. She was one of the few women who owned a Spanish land grant and was named as the sole owner. I am researching my great-grandmother's lineage. Her name is Margarita Villa FELIX and she married my great-grandfather, Ramon CONTRERAS born 1863 in Bakersfield, Calif., son of Victoriano CONTRERAS born 1817 and Manuela Preciado CONTRERAS born 1830. They resided in Bakersfield in 1870. Siblings were Vicente, Juan, Refugio, and Victoriano.
Ramon and Margarita married and moved to Tecate, Baja California, circa 1890. This is a cut from one of my aunt's obituaries: "Mr. Ramon CONTRERAS PRECIADO, in search of new horizons, comes to Tecate originating in the Alta California.  Here he acquired lands that were part of the agriculture colony of Tecate, receiving its holder of property from the President of Republic Porfirio Diaz. After being established in his ranch, he married the beautiful Margarita Feliz VILLA, who also came from the same place and who was daughter of a pioneering colonizer, Mr. Jose de Gracia FELIX, and the Mrs. Juana VILLA. Both families grew up producing the land, leaving the manifest their hold in this place. These are part of the roots of the genealogical tree of our personage in mention. Of these families and of the Mrs. Emilia there very well could have been written an infinity of pages, given the important path of these forgery families of the history of Tecate, whose genesis main of those colonizers, it’s probable that they were part of the 10 thousand Sonoreans (from Sonora, Mexico) that in caravan traveled on foot, on horses and wagons, after the fortune of the gold rush in California, and that exhausted the beautiful metal they returned to Mexican territory as was the case of these two families."
Ramon and Margarita eventually settled in East San Diego County and my great-aunt managed the land in Tecate. If there is any familia out there related to us, CONTRERAS or FELIX, we have a yahoo group site:

I hope that you can help me. My grandfather was Benito CONTRERAS. He had family that also lived in Tecate, Mex. He was born here in San Diego, Calif. They also had a rancho in Tecate. His father's name was Salvador CONTRERAS, who had somewhat of a bad reputation so he was not close to them. Salvador married Aruroa MARTINEZ, then divorced. He stayed in Mexico. Salvador
CONTRERAS had already been remarried by the time I met him. He had married Anita MESA. Their children were Rosa, Marcos, Anselmo, "Tuities" (that's how my mom knows this son), and Juana. My grandfather had a stepsister that lived in Pico Rivera or Whittier, Calif.  [YOCAPONE @ HOTMAIL.COM (nonmember), Chula Vista, Calif.]

I am trying to find information on Narcissa HIGUERA / EGUERA born around 1840 who was a Gabrielino who married James Vineyard ROSEMEYER / ROSEMYRE / ROSEMYER / ROSEMIRE. They lived for many years in Tehachapi, Bakersfield, and Tejon parts of California. I do not know where she died or is buried but know that her death occurred sometime after 1910. I am seeking any information, records, pictures, stories, on her and her descendants. I have traced the family line and have some information which I would be willing to share. From what I understand there is a recording of her voice at the Smithsonian Institute talking in her native tongue. Thank you for any responses or leads. I am a member of the Kern County Genealogy Society. The Union Cemetery here in Bakersfield has a Mrs. ROSEMYRE buried with James V. ROSEMYRE. Date of death around 1912. Narcissa ROSEMYRE was schooled at the San Gabriel Mission, but is thought to be either Kawaiisu or Tejon Yokut since she was born west of Tehachapi. Her language should tell. If you have any further questions, please contact mehalomorris@sbcglobal.net. [Harriet Morris (nonmember), Bakersfield, Calif.]

I'm currently researching the Los Coches Adobe in Soledad, Calif., for the City of Soledad who is now the owner. The adobe was constructed in 1843 by Maria Josefa SOBERANES and her husband William B. RICHARDSON. Josefa was one of the children of Feliciano SOBERANES and received title to the Los Coches Rancho in 1841, which is near Mission Soledad. I worked on this building 30 years ago and then Adeline C. RICHARDSON O'BRIEN was still alive and had a family archive relating to the RICHARDSON family. I would be interested in talking to her descendants as well as any known descendants of Josefa and William RICHARDSON. Hopefully, some have joined your organization and might be willing to share photos, primary documents, etc. to help understand the early history of this building. I hope you can help. Best,

Although I have little or no information on William Bruner RICHARDSON, he married Maria Josefa de Gracia SOBERANES July 28, 1839, in the chapel at the Monterey Mission (Mission San Carlos Borromeo del Rio Carmel). Josefa was born October 19, 1811, and was baptized November 22, 1811, at the Monterey Mission aforementioned. The baptism record per Huntington Missions project SC 02825, her godmother (Madrina) as Francisca CASTRO. Her parents were Feliciano Antonio Jose SOBERANES (1788-1868) [SC 01338] and Maria Antonia RODRIGUEZ (1795-1883) [SC 02018]. Her parents were married June 10, 1810, at the same mission as they were baptized. [Patrica Rose (Trejo) Thrulby (non-member), Merced, Calif.]

Does anyone know of any descendents living today of Juana BRIONES' husband Apolinario MIRANDA and how to contact them? Your help is much appreciated. [Hilda Sendyk (nonmember), Palo Alto, Calif.]

Respuestas a Pregunta 521 - 21 August 2008
Jose Apolinario MIRANDA was my 3rd-great-grand-uncle (although I am not that sure I should claim him . . . he definitely was not the perfect husband!). I am a direct descendent of his brother, Jose Hilario Feliciano MIRANDA. [Pat Garcia (member), Colfax, Calif.]

    Hi Hilda,
I am a direct descendant of Juana BRIONES and her husband Apolinario MIRANDA. My grandfather, Jesus Pedro GARCIA, was her grandson (son of her daughter, Maria Jesus Narcissa, and Jesus GARCIA). Jesus P. GARCIA had seven children, including my father, all of them deceased. I have been researching my family for decades and have not been able to locate any more of her descendants other then the above and six other grandchildren. These six grandchildren were the children of her three youngest daughters and appear to have died without issue. My grandparents have a number of grandchildren, my cousins, still living in California (the Bay Area); Texas (the Houston area); Oregon (the Portland area—my siblings); Washington State (Spokane—myself and and a cousin) and Florida (my sister). Also there are a number of great-grandchildren living in the above areas. Please write me at "garce1947@yahoo.com and I will give you those names and locations I have. [Patrick Garcia, Spokane, Wash.]

Gilbert MESA is a descendant of Apolinario MIRANDA and Juana BRIONES. He graduated from Palo Alto High School, so his address and phone number can be obtained from the alumni office there. Two of Apolinario and Juana's daughters married MESA men, sons of Juan Prado MESA, who owned the San Antonio Rancho south of and contiguous with Juana's Rancho la Purisima Concepcion. A man named Gilbert MESA who lived in the Los Angeles area died a couple of years ago, but this is not the same Gilbert who lived in the California Avenue area of Palo Alto and attended Paly. The descendant lives in a town south of here, I called his home a few years ago, if Paly does not supply the address and phone number, I can search in my many files. I wrote a biography of Juana BRIONES that will be published by the University of Arizona Press, out the end of September or first of October 2008. Juana and her two daughters and numerous descendants lived in the California Avenue area for many years, when it was Mayfield. Respuesta a Pregunta 518 - 12 July 2008
According to Citadel on the Channel by Richard S. Whitehead, p. 100: "Governor Neve lost no time in arranging for a replacement of Lt. Ortega as commander at Santa Barbara. Don Felipe Antonio de GOYCOECHEA was promoted from alférez (ensign) to lieutenant January 14, 1783, with orders to assume command of the Santa Barbara Company. For various reasons, the actual takeover did not occur for another year." That would make Felipe the 2nd commander of the presidio. Whitehead goes on to say he was of Basque descent, born in 1747 in the Real de Cosalá, a small town ninety miles southeast of Culiacán in the province of Sinaloa. The book tells quite more about his military life, but only speculation on his ancestry. [Benita H. Gray (member), San Diego, Calif.]

The following information is from Marie Northrop's Spanish-Mexican Families of Early California:1769-1850, Vol. I, pp. 44-. Santiago ARGUELLO'S brothers were: Joseph Ygnacio Maximo, Luis Antonio, Jose Gervasio, and Francisco Rafael Toribio de Jesus. Their father, Joseph Dario ARGUELLO, died in Guadalajara about 1827-28 and their mother, Maria Ygnacia MORAGA, was buried there, 13 April 1829. Jose Gervasio married Maria Encarnacion Dolores BERNAL and they had 3 daughters and a son. All were baptized at Mission Dolores. Jose was sent to Mexico as habilitado general and never returned to Alta California. He served as supplente in congress in 1827-28; retired in 1834; and probably died in Guadalajara. Luis Antonio married first Maria Rafaela Antonia SAL and they had two sons baptized at Mission Dolores. He married second Maria de la Soledad ORTEGA and they had 4 daughters and one son, all baptized at Mission Dolores. Luis' biography can be found in Bancroft's History of California, Vol. III, pp. 9-13. I am looking for information on the CARRILLO family. The children I have are Soledad, Rosenda, Jose Maria, Jose Luis, and Felipe. All the children were baptized at San Gabriel around 1849 to 1850, except Felipe who was baptized at Pala. The parents noted are Doroteo and Maria GALLARDO. I have researched the GALLARDO family back to Los Angeles. Rosenda married Victor SAMANIEGO, both living at Pala, and married on 26 August 1874. Soledad CARRILLO married Trinidad ACOSTA and they had a daughter Serafina born 24 June 1877. I don't know who Jose Maria CARRILLO married. Jose Luis married Refugio LLANES (my great-great-grandparents) on 28 October 1978 in Pala by the San Juan Capistrano priest. I know there is more family out there and I would love to meet and share genealogy. My grandmother and her sisters lived at Pala and have been searching for their family since the early 1940s and the search has been continued since by other family members. I believe Maria Macaria HERNANDEZ [father, Olayo HERNANDEZ, and mother, Maria Pomposa FLORES] married twice:  (1) Luis BARRIOS 23 October 1854, Mission Santa Barbara and (2) Benito UBIEDA/OVIEDA 29 December 1863, Mission Santa Barbara.
[Please note that the name UBIEDA has been spelled: UBIEDA, UVIEDA, OBIEDA and OVIEDA and probably many more ways....] Benito and Macaria had 8 children: Tomas, Jose Benito, Adolfo, Ysmael, Roberto, Lucinda, Maria Dolores and Eduardo OVIEDA.
Macaria HERNANDEZ BARRIOS OVEIDA died 4 December 1927, I believe, in Montecito, Santa Barbara, Calif.  As of the 1920 census, that is where she was living and the Vital Search Death Record states she died in Santa Barbara. And Benito UBIEDA was Yndio, from Sonora and his first spouse, Maria Guadalupe, was Chumash Yndia from Santa Barbara. [Terry Chaffee  (member), Carlsbad, Calif.]

    Maria Antonia Selsa/Celsa HERNANDEZ
was married to Luis A BARRIOS and Jose Ygnacio Antonio "Victorino" OLIVAS.
On the 1880 U.S. Federal Census, it is hard to determine which children are OLIVAS and which are BARRIOS. The BARRIOS children that are living with their mother, and stepfather, Jose Ygnacio Antonio "Victorino" OLIVAS, are all listed as BARRIOS. My grandmother interviewed Rosa Ann BARRIOS in the early 1960s, so this is how I stumbled upon this information.
These what I believe to be the children's names: Flora BARRIOS (1864–1944), Eduardo BARRIOS (1866–1929), Anselmo BARRIOS Sr. (1866–1932), Maria del Carmen Trinidad "Carmelita" BARRIOS (1868–1893), Rosa Ann BARRIOS (1870–1971), Luis Felipe BARRIOS (1872–), Maria Antonia BARRIOS (1874–), Carolina BARRIOS (1876–1900), and Dolores BARRIOS (1877–).
The OLIVAS children I believe are: Victorino OLIVAS (1878–), Jesus OLIVAS (1880–), Gertrudes OLIVAS (1882–1958), Josefa OLIVAS (1883–), and Addie OLIVAS (1884–1920). Some of these names my be duplicate people? Also, the marriage of Maria Antonia Selsa/Celsa HERNANDEZ and Jose Ygnacio Antonio "Victorino" OLIVAS took place about 1877 according to the 1900 U.S. Federal Census.  [Douglas Nulton Sr. (non-member), San Luis Obispo, Calif.]

I am looking for a VASQUEZ family, possibly from Half Moon Bay, and wonder if someone might be able to help me. Mary J. VASQUEZ, born about August 1845, married Thomas C. GAINES in 1864. Their eldest daughter, Lucy Jane, was born in 1865  (according to her obituary) in Half Moon Bay. However, I have been unable to connect Mary J. VASQUEZ to any VASQUEZ family who lived at Half Moon Bay. I have requested a copy of Mary's death certificate, but in the meantime, I have noticed that there are a Marcelina VASQUEZ, age 15 and a Modesta VASQUEZ, age 13, listed in the household of Tiburcio and Maria VASQUEZ in the 1860 San Mateo County census. I have not been able to find any evidence that these two girls are Tiburcio's children, at least they are not in any list of his children that I have found so far. Does anyone know who they were? Marcelina is the right age to have been the Mary J. VASQUEZ I am looking for, although I'm not sure Mary =  Marcelina. If Marcelina and Modesta are grandchildren of Tiburcio, who was their father? I have not been able to find any other VASQUEZ listed in any census who could be the Mary I am looking for. Mary J. VASQUEZ and Thomas C. GAINES were living in Gilroy Twp. in (then) Santa Clara county in 1870 and a few years later moved their family to Tulare County, where Mary died in 1920. Thanks so much for the responses to my original question regarding the parents of Mary Angel VASQUEZ. After additional research, I believe that Mary might be the daughter of Jose Antonio Dolores VASQUEZ and Maria del Rosario Josefa AMESQUITA. Their fifth child (of 21) was Maria de los Angeles Calletana, baptized at San Luis Obispo de Tolosa on 25 December 1844. Jose Antonio VASQUEZ was the son of Felipe VASQUEZ and Maria Nicanor LUGO, and the grandson of Tiburcio VASQUEZ and Maria Antonia BOJORQUEZ. The connection to Tiburcio and Maria Antonia could explain Mary Angel's connection to Half Moon Bay. I'm searching for information on Narciso BOTELLO'S death, when and where he died and was buried, as well as his family. Narciso arrived in Los Angeles in 1833. He had a wife, Francisca RUIZ, and two children, Narciso and Francisca, that appear in the Los Angeles census of 1850. These two children do not appear in the 1860 census, but a possible third child, Maria, does. After 1860, I cannot find any records for Narciso's wife or his children. There are many historical references to Narciso in Los Angeles and California. Narciso recorded his Anales del Sur de la California to Thomas Savage while living at the Santa Maria Rancho near San Diego in 1878 at the age of 63. This is the last dated record that I have for Narciso. Any input would be appreciated on what happened to Narciso and his family. [Stan]

I don't know if this is even of any help, but the closest name to Fermin that I found was Fermin, as in Padre Fermin Francicsco de LASUEN. He was probably at all the missions at one time or another. He came to California in 1768, became presidente of all California missions in 1785 after the death of Junipero Serra. Padre LASUEN died in 1803.

When I began my maternal family history project, I was under the impression that we had Irish ancestors and found Spanish surnames only in our line, and so the Irish story was a myth. However, in 2008, I accessed the 1910 and 1920 U.S. Federal Census reports searching for Pedro MORENO, my great-grandfather from Ventura County. Pedro "MARSHA" is listed; MORENO shows up under the yellow icon. His wife, Tomasa, and their children at home were also listed under MARSHA. That is probably the reason why my great-grandaunts were of the opinion that they were connected to the Irish. Does anyone know how or where I can find out why there was a name change from MORENO to MARSHA from 1910–1920? Thank you. [Lorri Ruiz Frain (member), Mountain View, Calif.]

Pregunta 503 - 10 April 2008
Looking for information on Luis Doroteo CARRILLO, married to Maria GALLARDO. They were married at Mission San Juan Capistrano, in the year 1878, month of  October. If anyone out there knows anything about the family could you please help? We trace our family back to Juan CARRILLO and Lucia MILLAN (MILLAR). Our grandparents were orphaned. They went to orphanages back in Banning, Calif., and to St. Frances de Pauw in Hollywood. But we know about Miss Mathias from St. Frances de Pauw since we were 10 years old. Can't find information on the school, either. Help. [Viki (not yet member), Chula Vista, Calif.]

I am descended from Lucia MILLAN and Juan CARRILLO, also. I did not have the name Luis Doroteo CARRILLO as one of their children but I do have 6 others, including 2 of my great–grandmothers--Maria Antonio Victoria and Maria Ygnacia. I have lots of info on the descendants of those 2 sisters. I am still looking for the name of Lucia's mother. You can write me at  isabel-ayala@sbcglobal.net .  [Isabel M. I am seeking information on the parents of Eufemia (CONTRERAS) PARRA. I have learned that she was born in what is now Riverside County, California. The 1860 census indicates that she was born around 1837.  Her husband's name was Alejo PARRA, the son of Miguel and Maria Antonia (CASTILLO) PARRA. Early mission records indicate that the PARRA family lived in the San Juan Capistrano area in the early 1800s. My great-grandfather was Cayetano COTA, originally from Mexico although not exactly sure where in Mexico. He can be found on a couple of census records for San Diego County. His wife was Benedita RAMIREZ. My question is, is she the Benedita RAMIREZ whose father is Maria Jose RAMIREZ and mother is Maria Dolores PALOMARES, both having a rich history from Santa Barbara area?  Cayetano used to own a rancho named Ville de las Viejas, where the Viejas Indian Reservation and Casino are at present. I have a copy of the original sale of land. I have Benedita's date of birth as about 1838–1844. Please help, I have hit a brick wall. Thanks in advance.  Sincerely [Dorothy Estela Cota (nonmember). El Cajon, Calif.]
Pregunta 501 UPDATE - 17 May 2008
I am sort of responding to the question about Cayetano COTA who was my paternal great-grandfather. I know he was born in Mexico although I do not know where in Mexico exactly. He at one time owned a rancho in the east county of San Diego named Valle de las Viejas, where the Viejas Indian Reservation now is. I also know that he was married to a Benedita (PALOMARES) RAMIREZ, my great-grandmother. My question is, is this the same Benedita RAMIREZ whose father is Jose Maria RAMIREZ, born about 1800 in San Andres Chalchicomula, Puebla, Mexico, and Maria Dolores PALOMARES, born about 1827 in Los Angeles, California? I would appreciate any information so that I can link my Benedita to her family. I am told that she was born in Santa Barbara, California, is this true? [Dorothy Cota (nonmember), El Cajon, Calif.]

I live in North Texas and was raised in West Texas and have come at a juncture in our family history. My family has discovered that our great-great-grandfather, Juan BRIONES, is from San Luis Potosi, Nueva Espana. We have also discovered that he may be the brother of Marcos BRIONES who is the father of the twins, Juana and Maria de La Luz. According to family passer-downs he was born in the late 1700s and left Nueva Espana because he married a mulata. According to family stories, he was oppressed and harassed by his family. For that reason, he moved north to present-day Terlingua, Texas and Santa Elena, Chihuahua, Mexico. I need to find out if there is a connection because I am writing about our family occupation of Big Bend National Park before it became a National Park. My great-great-grandfather was in Terlingua long before it was Mexico and even Texas. He is an original Tejano but was not astute or business savvy like Juana. A lot of people say that I have a lot of the herbal-natural healing gifts of my great-great-grandparents. If you want to know more about me visit my website at: www.flyingmidieagle1.com  [Pablo (Paul) O. Briones (nonmember)]
Note: Marie Northrop's Spanish-Mexican Families of Early California: 1769-1850, Vol. I, p. 89, does not show Juan as a brother to Marcos. However, she shows only two children born in San Luis Potosi of Vicente and his first wife, Maria Antonia de PADRON (Marcos Joseph born about 1757 and Maria Guadalupe born about 1764) so there is plenty of time for other children to have been born in between or after. La Tejedora

Pregunta 499 - 15 March 2008:
I am a descendant of Captain
Pedro Antonio de LISALDE. His father was Francisco Xavier CAMARENA de LISALDE and his father—I believe was--Nicolas de LISALDE and Rossa CAMARENA. I am having trouble getting beyond the latter.
My grandmother was Rita M. ELISALDE. Her father was Mathias J. ELISALDE and her mother was Merced (Mercedes) Armenta TAPIA.
I am trying to find out who Merced's parents are. It is said that Merced was adopted because her parents were dead. I am not sure who Merced's parents might be. I know that Merced and her sisters--Elisa and Anita--were adopted by Manuel Antonio TAPIA who possibly married their mother--Miranna, Vivana or Biviana BACA/VACA? I am unsure of the name. The name was not clear on the census records found.
It is also said that Merced was Native American. My father, his siblings, and my grandmother Rita had lived on the Morongo Indian Reservation when they were children circa 1930s or early 1940s. My uncle Robert Blaine CHAPMAN confirmed this. Rita's husband (James Blaine CHAPMAN) abandoned the family circa 1936; consequently, Rita and her children moved onto the Morongo Indian Reservation to live and go to school. My father would never admit to his heritage. He will not tell me about his Indian heritage. He grew up in denial and remains there in that mind set. He just recently admitted the Spanish part but not the Native American part of our heritage. Other members of the family have, but they do not know which tribe. I know that Pedro A. de LISALDE married a coyote Native American, but I do not know which tribe my great-grandmother Merced came from. The latter is what I am trying to find out.  [Daniel Chapman (nonmember)]

In relation to the Juaneño Band of Mission Indians of San Juan Capistrano, I am attempting to find a connection, if there is one, from the surname URQUIDEZ to the surname UQUETO. UQUETO is found as the native name on at least one male individual from the mission records and knowing that sometimes the native name of the father was applied as a surname to children, I am seeking any instance of the early, 1780-1880 or so, Juaneño individuals who may have had the surname of UQUETO or any similar variation.
Mainly I am attempting to locate early Juaneño ancestors of URQUIDEZ from San Juan Capistrano. UQUETO is very close in spelling and pronunciation from URQUIDEZ and it is quite possible the name changed over time. Thank you. [Suzanne Watkins (nonmember), San Diego, Calif.]

Manuel BUTRON (1727 Spain – 1793 Mission San Carlos, Monterey County, Alta California, New Spain), Captain of the Guard, personal friend to Frey Junipero Serra, headstone at doorway of church, remains under organ. Married 20 May 1773 Mission San Carlos marriage #180. Margarita Maria DOMINGUEZ baptized 7 January 1773 Mission San Carlos #32, took her (padrino) godfather's surname. This was Margarita's second baptism (both baptisms under same number), the first being performed a perilus (near death). Margarita had survived the Indian attack that had killed her parents on the Tulcucet Rancheria (Indian village taken over by the Spanish). It is possible she was mestizo. Buried Mission San Carlos Cemetery (El Campo Sancto) 25 January 1815 . See www.tayberry.weebly.com for a good picture of the Manuel BUTRON descendents. I read, write, and speak Spanish. Helps with translation of records kept by the Spanish Missions. Manuel is my 4th- great-grandfather.

I am a member and am presently working with screenwriter Shawna Baca to tell the Modesta AVILA story. You may recall that she was the lady who stood up to the railroads in 1889, was put on trial in Santa Ana, convicted and sent to San Quentin, where she died. Although we got a copy of her 239-page court case and her 23-page San Quentin record and have some newspaper articles about her problems, we thought that it might be good to talk to some descendants of her siblings (if we can locate them). Modesta was one of 14 children. If anyone has any connections to AVILA family of San Juan Capistrano, I'd love to be able to contact them and ask a few questions.     Vicenta GUTIERREZ (GUTIERRES, GUTIERES)
lived at or near San Carlos Mission between 1833–1847 (maybe earlier and possibly later as well, but definitely during the tenure of Padre Jose Maria del Refugio Sagrado Suarez, aka Padre Real). She was described as a girl or young woman around 1840ish. Her brother was called "El Huero," and his father was known as Joaquin GUTIERREZ.
    Joaquin
was said to be married to or living with an Indian woman named Josefa (Chepa) REAL around this time period, too (but she's not Vicenta's mother). Joaquin may have been a Spanish soldier married to an Indian woman. I have found a Joaquin GUTIERREZ married to Maria Josefa PERFECT at San Carlos in 1839, ages 23 and 16 respectively; however, this makes them too young to be Vicenta's parents. Thanks [Raul Gonzales Berrellez (nonmember), Tucson, Ariz.]

The BERRELLEZAS that came with Anza would be Nicolas Antonio BERREYESA (son of Cayetano BERREYESA and Nicolas LEYBA) and his sister, Maria Isabel BERREYESA. Nicolas was born about 1761 at Villa de Sinaloa, Sinaloa, Mexico. The surname has many variations in spelling. Information is from Marie Northrop's Spanish-Mexican Families of Early California 1769-1850, Vol. I, pp. 76-78. [Benita Gray (member), San Diego, Calif.]

Font and Anza both list Nicolas and Maria Isabella, although their ages and full names do not correspond in all listings. The names are spelled differently and sometimes have many middle name variations. I am a BERRYESSA or BERRELLEZA and it is found that they joined the expedition in Tubac. They were the only unmarried members not attached to a family. They are the direct relatives of those who had ranch land near Putah Creek in Sonoma area—losing most of the land in gambling. My direct relative was the first white or European woman born in the Santa Clara Mission. She is buried north of Woodland, California. There is a winery nearby called Berryessa. They just used the name, but are not relations. Nicolas married Maria PERALTA and they had many children. One was Clara, my direct relative. Maria died in 1805 and is buried in the mission plot along with her husband Nicolas. Maria Isabella died earlier and is buried in the San Francisco Presidio plot. She had no children but had a husband who was killed by Indians one year before she died. I will post our family history which is outlined in a website later. Commenting on Pregunta 479 and the link to a BERRYESSA family site [on Links page]. This is a nice site, filled with a lot of interesting information. I was able to independently verify much of the vital statistics from the Early California Population Project, although I found a few discrepancies in some minor details. For  example, Nicolas and Maria Gertrudis' son Nicolas Antonio was born in 1789, not 1787. Nicolas' second wife after Maria Gertrudis was Maria Ignacia, not Ignacio. In text, there is a mention that Sisto, son of Nasario, married Nicolasa HIGUERA in Santa Clara, when the ceremony actually took place at Mission San Francisco Solano. This is correctly reported in Sixto's family tree entry, however. Another son of Nasario is identified as Ramon Juan who married Evangelista. Actually, this boy was baptized Ramon Juan Evangelista according to the mission records.  Nasario's child listed as Antonia Maria actually was a boy Antonio Maria, described in the records as a "parvulo."  And finally, the birth and baptism information on Nasario's daughter Maria Ynes seems to be compressed together. ECPP reports that she
was baptised on 2 August 1829 when she was 2 days old, so her birthday would have been July 31, not August 31. Despite these small details that need correcting, I want to compliment Betty Howard, who put this site together, on the research she has done, the interesting family stories she has compiled, and the attractive presentation she has made of all this information.     Antonio CASANOVA
died March 1850 in Los Angeles (1850 US Census CA Mortality Schedule). His daughter, Rosa, married Francisco SOLANO 22 May 1857 at the Plaza Church (Plaza Church records). Francisco SOLANO died 07 December 1871 in Los Angeles and was buried at the (original) Calvary Cemetery, located at Bishop's Road and N. Broadway, and Rosa CASANOVA [FERLIN] died 14 August 1884 and was also buried at Calvary (diaries of Alfredo SOLANO). All burials at Calvary Cemetery have now been removed to other locations—presumably New Calvary, but not necessarily. (1) Does anyone have further information about Antonio CASANOVA, Rosa CASANOVA, or Francisco SOLANO? (2) Does anyone know to where the Calvary Cemetery interments were removed? Where does the last name PACHECO come from???
Note: this query came without any name or e-mail address. I do not normally publish questions without a submitting name or e-mail, but this question gives me the opportunity to remind people of that policy. Please remember, you must fill in a name and an e-mail address on the submittal form. I receive all the submittals as coming from the website itself. Also, I never publish queries asking about descendants of a family name without some kind of given names, places, or dates to limit the scope—such questions are just too broad. However, this question goes the other direction, so I thought it would be of general interest. La Tejedora

My great-grandfather's name was Ramon VELARDE and my grandfather's name was Pablo VELARDE. According to our family history the VELARDES came from Spain, then to New Mexico (via) Land Grant and then to California—San Bernardino and Colton Valley (Agua Mansa) in the 1840s and later with two others developed the first water systems in that area. If you have any sources of information that would verify this history, please advise. Thank you. [Ron Velarde (nonmember), Simi Valley, Calif.]

Respuesta a Pregunta 468 - 21 August 2008
You can find your VELARDES (or BELARDES) in several of the published histories of Riverside and San Bernardino counties. They are part of the New Mexican "colony" of San Salvador de Jurupa (Agua Mansa / La Placita) which is now largely part of Colton. The best book on that community is Defending Eden by Joyce C. Vickery. The given names "Pablo" and "Ramon" have recurred over several generations. Without more specifics as to time periods, I'd surmise you are a grandson of the Pablo "Pasvalo" VELARDE who was born in 1879 and died in 1936, a son of Ramon J. VELARDE (1857–1933) and Maria Trinidad VELARDE (1865-1917). That Ramon was, in turn, a son of the Pablo VELARDE referenced as among the early settlers of San Salvador. He was born in Abiquiu, New Mexico, on 15 January 1828 (a son of Francisco Baltazar VELARDE and Maria Susanna ROYBAL) and died in Colton, California, in 09 October 1922. His wife, Maria, was a daughter of Jose A. VELARDE (who was born in New Mexico in 1837 and died in California in 1870) and of Philomena ARANJO, who was born in 1845. Pablo VELARDE gave an interview in 1922 recalling his journey with his parents to California between 1838 and 1844. That account is published in Brown & Boyd's History of  San Bernardino and Riverside Counties in the biographical section. [Alexander King (member), Los Angeles, Calif.]

I stumbled across your website after a Google search attempting to find out some information on my ancestry. My grandmother is Helen LARIOS (maiden name). I am trying to locate a book she told me about where our family history is documented. The book is Quicksilver Country, California’s New Idria Mining District by Peter C. Frusetta. [Loretta Rosas (nonmember)]

Respuesta a Pregunta 467 - 27 October 2007
Please let me know more about yourself. Are you in the San Benito County area? Are you familiar with other LARIOS descendants from that area? I am a great-great-grandson of Manuel Salvador LARIOS and Maria del Carmen PACHECO. My great-grandfather, Martin del Patrocinio LARIOS, was their youngest son, born in 1850. He married Helen BEHAN. She taught school in San Francisco. I believe she died sometime in the 1940s. Manuel Salvador died in San Juan Bautista in 1865. His third wife, Rosario Armas de LARIOS, with her son, Estolano LARIOS, and her HIGUERA children from a previous marriage moved to New Idria. I do not know names of others in the LARIOS family who went to New Idria, but I have met a number of their descendants. Cousin Bob PICHA in Hollister knows them best.
Three copies of Peter Frusetta's Quicksilver Country (1991) are available on Amazon.com for approximately $65 each. I suggest the library or an inter-library transfer. I have seen the book, believe I own it, but also think I must have it in storage somewhere. I do not remember how much LARIOS family history it contains. Peter Frusetta told the 1997 LARIOS family reunion that Theodore LARIOS taught him to ride and work cattle. There is need for more research about Jose Maria LARIOS, who was Manuel Salvador's father. At http://www.new-idria.org, the claim is made that he was born in 1838 in Spain. In the 1790 padron (census) of California, he was 27 years old. He married Julianna LINARES in Santa Clara in 1790. The marriage record states he was from Zapotlan, which is in current day Guadalajara, Mexico.
Please let me know more specifically what information you would like to know. I have some other sources I can dig up about which you might not know. [Boyd de Larios ("de" added by my Scottish-Irish grandmother) (member), South San Francisco, Calif.]

My fourth-great-(I think) grandfather is Andres DUARTE. I have heard mention of one of my great(s)-grandmother was a Gabrieleño Indian named Arelia (I believe), and she is buried at the San Gabriel mission with a plaque honoring her. Have you heard of her and how exactly is the connection between her and our grandfather Andres? If this helps—my great aunt, who has passed in recent years, was Vicki CORDOVA.     According to Marie Northrop's Spanish-Mexican Families of Early California: 1769-1850, Vol. I, pp. 68, 71, 72: Andres Avelino DUARTE was the 7th child and 5th son of Jose Francisco Leandro DUARTE (born about 1770 Barroveca, Durango, Sonora, Mexico, of Joaquin DUARTE and Maria GUILLEN; buried 28 May 1832 Los Angeles Plaza Church) and Maria Francisca BRIONES (born about 1775 Loreto, Baja California, Mexico, of Jose Antonio BRIONES and Maria Gertrudis HIGUERA; buried 28 May 1832 Los Angeles Plaza Church) who were married about 1782 in Loreto. Andres was baptized 30 November 1805 and was buried 24 January 1863 at Mission San Gabriel Cemetery. He was the grantee of Rancho Azusa (7,000 acres) on 10 May 1841 by Governor Juan B. Alvarado. In 1846 he was granted a San Gabriel lot. The city of Duarte retains his name. He was married about 1827 to Maria Gertrudis Florentina VALENZUELA (baptized 16 October Mission San Diego; parents Jose Miguel VALENZUELA and Maria Visitacion RODRIGUEZ; died about 1906 at San Gabriel).     Your father's great-grandmother must be either Gertrude A. HILL or Mercedes K. BOYD who are the two daughters of Francsico Xavier HERNANDEZ with his 2nd wife Delphina. Gertrude A. HERNANDEZ was born 23 July 1886. Mercedes K. HERNANDEZ was born 14 June 1889. Their mother, Delphina HERNANDEZ'S, maiden name is WEINGARDEN. (San Jose Mercury Historical Archive) You can get birth certificates from Santa Clara County Office of Clerk-Recorder which requires infant 's first, middle and last name; date of birth; and mother's maiden name.
Francisco Xavier was baptized at Santa Clara Mission on 13 December 1849. He was 40 days old at that point putting his birth date as 3 November1849. His baptismal record number is SCL 10959. His parents are Jose Maria HERNANDEZ and Maria Gertrudis CIPRIAN. Francisco was baptized as Francisco Xavier but I found information on him as just Francisco or Francisco X. or Frank Xavier or Frank X. or F. X. or just F. HERNANDEZ. There is a lot of little information on the Frank X. HERNANDEZ family in the San Jose Mercury Historical Archive. They were socially prominent in San Jose and widely known.
Jose HERNANDEZ and Gertrudis CIPRIAN were married at Santa Clara Mission on 26 November 1830. The marriage record number is SCL 02444. Maria Gertrudis Ynes CIPRIAN was baptized at Santa Clara Mission on 8 August 1810. She was 4 days old putting her birth date as 4 August 1810. Her baptismal record number is SCL 05715X. Her parents are Leocadio CIPRIAN and Petra Maria ARCHULETA and they had 14 children. Jose Maria HERNANDEZ was baptized on 30 September 1802. He was 2 days old putting his birth date as 28 September 1802. His baptismal record number is SCL 04373. His father is unknown ("no conocido") and his mother is Serafina HERNANDEZ of whom there is no information.
There were other HERNANDEZES in San Jose and the rest of California in 1802 but none of the mission system records connect them to Jose Maria. Jose Maria's mother Serafina is a mystery. You can see mission document information for free online on the Huntington Californio database. You can request a printed copy of Santa Clara Mission documents from the Santa Clara University Archive for a fee.
Francisco and Delphina are buried at Oak Hill Cemetery in San Jose. Frank died 27 February 1901 and Delphina died 1 June 1905. (SJ Merc Hist Arch) Gertrudis died some time after Francisco was born in 1849 and before the special California census in 1852. She is most likely buried in the Santa Clara Mission cemetery in Santa Clara. There may be more definite death and burial information in the HERNANDEZ paper folder at the Santa Clara City Library Heritage Pavilion. I may have seen it. I remember reading something that said she died in childbirth. Jose Maria died sometime after the US census (in the Concord area of Contra Costa county where he was living) was taken on 9 August 1870 and before his widow Expectacion HERNANDEZ married Louis HAMLIN in San Francisco as reported by the Contra Costa Gazette on 12 June 1875. I have no death date and burial site at this time.
There is one photograph of Jose Maria shown with a son taken possibly in the 1850s but he remains an enigma.

I believe he was a soldier/rancher near San Juan Capistrano. I wish I knew more about my great-grandmother. If anyone can help, I'd be eternally grateful. [Daniel McKim (nonmember)]

I'm looking for wives for Luis MANRIQUEZ about 1772 and Jose Julian MANRIQUEZ about 1801. Both are from San Juan Capistrano, Calif. [Lupe C. Lopez (nonmember), Whittier, Calif.]

I am researching relatives who are reported to have founded Santa Barbara. The names are Matias REYES who is reported to have donated property for the Botanical Gardens and his wife Rosilda possibly GONZALES. They only had one child that I am aware of, and that is Petra REYES who married Jose Antonio CRUZ. Thanks for your help. [A. Flowers (nonmember), Atlanta, GA.]
Note: I could find no REYES associated with the founding of Santa Barbara in my limited resources at home, but certainly they could have been early settlers. I feel it is important to correct misinformation so hope our readers can provide us with material on Matias REYES and his ancestors and descendants. La Tejedora

Matias REYES, although not an original founder, was indeed a well-known figure in early Santa Barbara. Matias REYES was a woodcutter and sold firewood door-to-door. He did own at one time 101 acres of land in Mission Canyon. Part of it was the Botanical Gardens and also included what is now known as Scoffield Park.
Matias was married to a full-blooded Cahuilla Indian by the name of Griselda, first married by a Justice of the Peace in San Diego, then again by the Church in Santa Barbara. The first of several children is listed as Petra REYES (later married to Jose Antonio CRUZ). I found one record that listed Petra's mother as 'Christiana, a neophyte'. A local historian believes the priest who recorded this misunderstood Griselda's name and wrote it by mistake as "Chrisanta."
Matias died on 21 March 1902 in Santa Barbara, Calif. You may view his picture in one of several Santa Barbara history books, one in particular is Santa Barbara Past and Present by Walker Thompkins, published in 1975; another is California Editor by Thomas M. Storke. Matias REYES was my great-great-grandfather, Petra my great-grandmother. I am trying to trace my ancestry and believe that one of the children of Carlos Antonio CARRILLO or Jose Antonio CARRILLO may be the grandfather of my grandmother, Eva CARRILLO de GALLARDO (1883–1979). She was born in Los Angeles. I would very much appreciate any help with finding her family's lineage. Does anyone know the names of Carlos's or Jose's children?
I know that Eva CARRILLO'S father was a lawyer. She was linked to the Habsburgs in Austria and a viceroy of New Spain. Much of her family were high ranking officers in the Mexican army. She once said she was a cousin of Leo CARRILLO, the actor, and of Wm. GAXTON, the actor, and that her relatives settled California. Please help! [Kay Mcanally (not yet member), Los Angeles, Calif.]

According to Marie Northrop's Spanish-Mexican Families of Early California: 1769-1850, Vol. I, pp. 99-100: Carlos Antonio's male children were Jose Gertrudis Carmelo (born 1810, married Maria Manuela ORTEGA); Pedro Catarino (born 23 February 1818, married Maria Josefa BANDINI); and Jose de Jesus (born 29 December 1824, married Tomasa GUTIERREZ). I would like to confirm certain CASTRO members of my family line for whom I have no sources. From census reports, I do know that Narciso CASTRO (born 1843/Calif.; married Joana HERMAN, born 1850/Calif.) was the son of Evaristo CASTRO (born 1820/Calif.; married Magdelena Pacheco MOLANO, born 1830/Calif.). However, I am unable to find sources confirming, as reported by family members, that Evaristo CASTRO was the son of Jose CASTRO (born about 1800/?) and Inez ROBLES (date/place of birth unknown). Furthermore, I am unable to find proof that Jose CASTRO was in turn the son of Jose Mariano CASTRO (born 1765 Sinaloa/Mex.; married Maria Josefa ROMERO, born 1777 Loreto/Baja Calif.). I am told that Jose CASTRO was the younger brother of Maria Josefa CASTRO (born 11 Apr. 1792/Santa Barbara, Calif.). Any source material you can provide on the line from Evaristo CASTRO to Jose CASTRO and his wife Inez, to Jose's purported parents Jose Mariano CASTRO and Maria Josefa ROMERO would be gratefully appreciated!     According to Marie Northrop's Spanish-Mexican Families of Early California: 1769-1850, Vol. II, p. 51: Jose Saturnino Trinidad CASTRO married Maria Ines ROBLES. Jose Saturnino was the third child and second son of Jose Mariano CASTRO and Maria Josefa ROMERO and was born 9 February 1797; baptized 10 February 1797 at Mission San Luis Obispo. According to Northrop, none of his siblings were born or baptized in Santa Barbara nor named Maria Josefa. Jose Mariano CASTRO (born about 1765 at Sinaloa, Sonora, Mexico, of Joachim Isidro CASTRO and Maria Martina BOTILLER; died 1828) married Maria Josefa ROMERO (born about 1777 at Loreto, Baja California, Mexico, of Juan Maria ROMERO and Maria Lugarda SALGADO) 19 February 1791 at Mission Santa Barbara.     Hello distant cousin Marilyn!
In one of those twists of fate my family has been looking for years for a way to confirm my great-great-grandfather's, Salvador CASTRO, parents. We had information that he was the son of Jose Saturnino Trinidad CASTRO and Inez ROBLES and that there was a will listing their children dealing with Rancho Las Animas but had no idea where this will/information came from. Salvador was supposed to have been born/baptized at Santa Cruz. Repeated searches have not turned him up anywhere in the mission records. I have come to the deduction that Salvador's birth records are in the missing books from Santa Cruz and he is listed nowhere else. The best part of all this is just in the last week a search I did turned up the Leon Rowland pre-statehood document files on line at the UCSC  McHenry Library special collections. In them is a transcript of Inez ROBLES de CASTRO'S will dated 13 April 1867, Branciforte, listing her children!! Averisto (Everisto, many ways to spell this) and Salvador are in there. It is Box#A-3,Card# 128.01,.02,.03 card category CASTRO, document #038. I really don't know much about this resource, where the actual will is etc. I am trying to compose an e-mail to them to get information about this resource and hopefully to plan a trip there in the future. Perhaps someone with Los Californianos can enlighten us about this resource. But it is good to find something after so long looking. I have been in touch with several cousins that are descendants of Salvador's children and have a copy of a picture of him. I would enjoy hearing/sharing what you know about his brother or any of this family, my e-mail is mtrh8@yahoo.com [Tina Micheal Ruse (not yet member), Sacramento, Calif.]

We do have a Traveling Genealogy Library (TGL) that is available to the public at our Quarterly Meetings. You can find out the details of these meetings on our website. There is a nominal charge of $5 per meeting for nonmembers to do research in the TGL. The library is usually open from 3 to 8 p.m. on the Friday of the meeting and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (hours sometimes start at 7:30 a.m. and sometimes extend to 5:30 p.m.) on the Saturday of the meeting. I have been researching my ancestor, Jose Ramon BOJORQUES, and his wife, Maria Francisca ROMERO. The popular history is that she was born in Villa Sinaloa. To follow up on a question member Ellen McBride asked a number of years ago, is it possible that Maria Francisca ROMERO is the daughter of Jose Xavier ROMERO and Ana Josefa MONDRAGON from Sonora? I've located a baptism record in Mission 2000 that shows her baptism by Fr. Ignacio Xavier Keller on 22 December 1744 at Guevavi. The dates would match perfectly with her age listed on the Anza roster, Antepasados VIII, f.75. Her father served at one time as a tiente at the Buenavista Presidio. Ramon BOJORQUES was a veteran soldier who was taken from the Buenavista Presidio for the expedition. If true, Maria Francisca ROMERO'S grandparents would be Diego ROMERO and Maria BOJORQUEZ. Can anyone help or confirm what I'm finding in the records? Thank you. [Tom Silva (member), Walnut Creek, Calif.]

    Hello Tom,
I am just started researching the Mission 2000 records in an attempt to put together my husband's family tree and I have found that it is very difficult to sort through these records. I will be spending the next few weeks analyzing the data so I will get back with you with my results. From a quick preliminary look at the records, I have put together a spreadsheet of the ROMEROS and I will need to sort through the Jose ROMEROS (Jose Antonio, Jose Xavier, Jose Manuel). There was a Jose ROMERO who was the brother of Diego, a Jose ROMERO who was the son of Diego, and a Jose ROMERO who was the son of Rafael ROMERO. If we can sort out our Joses then I think we can get the answer to your question. It is my understanding that the Mission 2000 database is under constant revision to address conflicts such as ours where there may be a question as to tying the events of a name to one person that may actually be several persons. There is a person to contact when such an outcome is discovered. We have traced my husband's ancestors back to Francisco ROMERO (who was the son of Jose ROMERO and Maria Soledad SAENZ) and Victoriana OCOBOA. We have the same issue in trying to sort out the Joses. If you know anything about these people it would be greatly appreciated. I will get back with you as soon as I have spent some time going through the records. You may want to check out the family trees under the help section in the Mission 2000 database if you have not already done so. [Laura Kantowski (nonmember), Tulsa, Okla.]

Santa Barbara, Calif., is my birthplace and I am a descendant of the COTA family. My maternal grandmother was Josephina COTA ZAHLKE, died around 1969, approximate age 83. While living she was always recognized as a native daughter during the annual Santa Barbara Fiesta parade. My grandfather (her second husband) Henry ZAHLKE was from Hamburg, Germany, died 1946-1949. He was a naturalized citizen. There were several siblings, male and female, who lived near her home on Ortega Street. I would like any information of the family background. There are many stories which may or may not be true, such as the family owning an inn for weary travelers near Montecito, Calif. This "Inn" was reported to be a house of ill repute. Supposedly our family is from Spain and not of Mexican or Portuguese descent. [Marcella Roylen Gullicks (nonmember), Dothan, Ala.]

I have a great deal of information on Pedro AMADOR (my great-great-great-great-grandfather). Here's a sample: Enlisted at Loreto, 1764 (Service record: TBL, C–A 16: 19). With Portolá in second party to San Diego, and on to San Francisco under Portolá and Rivera (AGNM, Indiferente de Guerra, Legajo 3, 161 B). With Rivera on his return to Velicatá, 11 February 1770, but did not return with him to San Diego in July 1770 (AGNM, Indiferente de Guerra, Legajo 3, 161 B). Acting sergeant in Escolta de la Frontera at Velicatá, 1773. Obtained permit to resign and return to home in Cocula, 1774. After eight months absence, returned to Loreto simply as soldier (Bancroft, History of California, Vol. II, p. 584). At Misión Santo Domingo, 1780. In Sonora with Rivera conducting settlers to Alta California (missed Yuma massacre), 1781 (AHBCS, Político, 49). Returned to Loreto, 1782, assigned to Escolta de la Frontera late 1782 and 1783 (AHBCS, Político, exp. 71). Transferred 25 January 1784 to Presidio of Santa Bárbara (AHBCS, Político, 102); promoted to sergeant in 1787 (AGS, Secretaría de Guerra,! Hojas de Servicio, leg. 7275, VII, 82; Bancroft, History of California, Vol. I, p. 472). Leader of the five to eight soldiers guarding new Misión de Santa Cruz, 1795–1797 (Bancroft, op. cit., p. 495). Listed as retired 31 December 1801, 4 December 1815 (TBL, C–A 21: 76–77, 81). — Men of the 1769 Overland Expeditions, Velicatá to San Diego by Harry Crosby.
As the grizzled Sergeant Pedro AMADOR wryly commented in his service record, the only compensation he had received for eighteen years of service in California was fourteen Indian arrows in his body. Colonial Life in Spanish California During the North American Revolution by Leon G. Campbell.
I have quite a bit of his service record, his three wives and eleven children. Contact me at patgarcia@cebridge.net  [Pat Garcia (member), Colfax, Calif.]

We are well into our research on Silvestre de la PORTILLA, my husband's great-grandfather. He and brother Pablo, we think, arrived around 1819. Pablo was with 3rd Company of the Spanish Army. Silvestre (#1, as we lovingly call him) seemed to have been involved at Mission San Luis Rey and eventually had Rancho Valle de San Jose. Indian problems, etc., caused it to become Warner's Ranch. OK, we are looking for any information as to what happened to him after 1861, when he married, at age 60, Claudia VALDEZ, age 17. They had 7 or 8 children, some of whom we knew. Anyone know of a painting of Silvestre #1 we have been trying to locate? It was Silvestre upon a horse in front of the mission. We last saw it at the mission in 1975—any clues on how to trace it would be appreciated. The mission seems not to be able to assist us. Many thanks—p.s., they changed the name to PORTILLO around 1880-??? [Bob & Sue Winters (new applicants), Twain Haarte, Calif.]

Pregunta 444 - 22 June 2007
I have two questions. The first concerns my 5th-great-grandparents, Felipe Santiago de la Cruz PICO and his wife, Maria Jacinta de la BASTIDA, who along with their family, including my 4th-great-grandfather Jose Miguel PICO, were members of the Anza Expedition to Alta California. The ultimate goal of the expedition was to establish a settlement at San Francisco. However, it seems that the PICO family ended up in Los Angeles rather than in San Francisco or any of the towns nearby. Did they simply leave the expedition when it reached Los Angeles, or did they continue on up to San Francisco and then return to and settle in Los Angeles? By the way another pair of my 5th-great-grandparents, Jose Ramon BOJORQUEZ and his wife, Maria Francisca ROMERO, were also members of the Anza Expedition, but they remained with the expedition for the full journey and were among the founding families of San Jose.
My second question concerns yet another set of 5th-great-grandparents, Jose Fernando de VELASCO y LARA and Maria CAMPOS. After Jose Fernando left Maria and their children stranded in Santa Barbara and returned to Mexico, she married a man named Luis Gonzaga de LUGO. Luis's father was Francisco Ginez de LUGO. Are these de LUGOS related to my 6th-great-grandfather Jose Francisco Salvador de LUGO, husband of Juana Maria MARTINEZ y VIANAZUL, and furthermore, along this same line of questioning, was my 5th-great-grandmother Maria Josefa de LUGO, wife of Domingo RUIZ, related to either Francisco Gonzaga de LUGO or Jose Francisco Salvador de LUGO?     Felipe Santiago de la Cruz PICO was a soldier recruit with the second Anza expedition. Although he appears on the 31 December 1776 San Francisco Presidio roster, Antepasados Vol. II, 1977, there is speculation that he never served in San Francisco. He was reassigned to San Diego at some point in time in 1776 and he then appears on the San Diego Presidio rosters. He raised most of his family there and retired from the army before 1790. He received permission from the government to retire at Los Angeles and is listed there in the 1790 Los Angeles Census. In his later years, he and Maria Jacinta BASTIDA relocated to the Santa Barbara area where their son Miguel PICO was a soldier at the presidio, and married to Casilda de la Cruz SINOVA. Maria Jacinta died and was buried at the Santa Barbara Presidio Chapel Cemetery on 15 May 1796. Miguel and his brother Patrico were grantees for Rancho San Jose del Gracia de Simi in 1795.  Miguel retired from the military and served as the mayordomo of Mission San Buenaventura. Santiago de la Cruz PICO was living with Miguel PICO when he died and he was buried at the Mission Cemetery on 12 May 1815.
Ramon BOJORQUES served as a soldado de cuera at the San Francisco Presidio and he also served as the cabo of the escolta for both the San Francisco and Santa Clara missions. You can find an interesting anecdote about him in later life in San Jose in Californio Voices—The Oral Memoirs of Jose Maria Amador and Lorenzo Asisara, edited by Gregorio Mora-Torres. I've been told he is buried under the church floor at Mission San Jose. Hope this helps. [Tom Silva (member), Walnut Creek, Calif.]

I would be interested in learning any information available on the ancestry of Francisco Maria Josef de CASTRO and his wife, Zeferina LIMON. Is it known, for instance, when this CASTRO family came to Mexico and from where? [John Bryan Starr (member), New Canaan, Conn.]

Respuesta a Pregunta 442 - 29 June 2007
I have just a little information on Francisco Maria Josef de CASTRO, but nothing any further back. Per Harry Crosby's Antigua California: Born about 1725 at Villa de Sinaloa, died 1770 at Loreto; wife Maria Zeferina LIMON (I have no further information on her.).  Enlisted in Presidio of Loreto, Escuadra del Sur, before 1751. By 1754 CASTRO had been promoted to sergeant and entrusted to conduct a series of legal hearings. He remained in the south until 1768 then was made mayordomo of Misión de la Purisima (Alta California). He was literate. Hope this helps. [Valerie Hall (member), Fair Oaks, Calif.]

Here's a bautisomo record I came across (not allowed to post pic if copyrighted) of D.n Fran.co Maria Joseph de CASTRO and D.a Maria Zepherina LIMON . . . the year was 1768. This record is # 259. Please forgive any errors. Names are as they are written here, but some other letters (other than names) are a bit hard to decipher. Overall, it's nice writing. Reads (in Spanish) as follows:

This is the only record we have. Geronimo got immigration in 1888 and claimed he was from Mexico. I cannot find records on him in Mexico anywhere. I do believe they came from the Rio Grande. According to Marie Northrop's Spanish-Mexican Families of Early California: 1769-1850, Vol. I, pp. 139 - 152:
Joseph Vicente FELIZ (born about 1741 at Alamos, Sonora, Mexico, of Joseph FELIZ & Manuela ESQUER) was married about 1758 at Alamos to Maria Ygnacia Manuela PINUELAS (born about 1745 at Alamos; died 24 Nov. 1775 on Anza Trail near Tubac, Mexico). Joseph Vicente was buried 30 Jan. 1809 at Mission Santa Barbara. He and his seven children came on the Anza Expedition. He was a corporal in charge of founding El Pueblo de Los Angeles, 4 Sept. 1781, and owner of Feliz Rancho from 1802 - 1816, a portion of which is now Griffith Park.
Their second son was Joseph Francisco FELIZ (born about 1760 at Alamos) who was married 29 Jan. 1788 at Mission San Gabriel to Maria Josefa COTA (born about 1771 at Loreto, Baja Calif., of Roque Jacinto de COTA & Juana Maria VERDUGO; died 14 Apr. 1836 & buried 16 April at Mission San Fernando). Joseph Francisco was buried 21 Mar. 1847 at Mission San Gabriel. He was stationed at San Diego presidio and settled at Los Angeles in late 1791. They had 15 children. Their second son was Jose Tomas FELIZ (born about 1793 near Los Angeles) who was married 5 Jan. 1815 at Mission San Fernando to Maria de Jesus LOPEZ (born about 1797 at Mission San Vicente, Baja Calif., of Juan Bautista LOPEZ and Maria Dolores SALGADO; she married second 19 May 1835 Jordon PACHECO). Jose Tomas was buried 12 Nov. 1830 at Los Angeles Plaza Church. He was a soldado de cuera in the escolta of the Santa Barbara Presidio, but could have had a home on the family rancho. Their last child (born after Jose Tomas' death) was Thomas Aquino FELIZ who was baptized 8 March 1831 at Los Angeles Plaza Church.
Given the uncertain ways homes are identified in a community, the house in question could still be known as [Jose] Tomas's home after his death or, although Thomas [Aquino] would have been quite young at the time of the treaty, it could have been his home as an adult, and thus known that way. However, there may be other grandchildren of Joseph Vicente that Marie Northrop does not cover. [Benita H. Gray (member), San Diego, Calif.]

I am looking for more information about Maria de Lopez de LOWTHER (1881-1977). Her parents were Juan Nepomiceno LOPEZ and Guadalupe VIDAL of San Gabriel, and for many years the family lived in the adobe behind Mission San Gabriel, now known as Casa Vieja or sometimes Casa Lopez de Lowther. I would like to trace Juan back further, but I have had no luck so far. I would also be interested in knowing about about any living descendants (Maria herself had no children but her brothers and sisters did). The family was in San Gabriel at least as early as 1840, and perhaps earlier than that (according to Juan N. LOPEZ'S obituary). [Dr. Eileen Wallis (nonmember), Glendale, Calif.]

According to the first link: "This adobe was built in about 1792 by Jose Maria Claudio LOPEZ, Mayordomo of Mission San Gabriel. Claudio was Maria CARRILLO'S (Maria Ygnacia LOPEZ'S) uncle. Claudio may have established a close relationship with his niece after her father's death (Juan Francisco LOPEZ) when she was age seven."
"It is possible that the Joaquin and Maria CARRILLO family lived in or near here during their stay at San Gabriel, c. 1819-1823."
"Claudio was buried beneath the Holy water font at Mission San Gabriel. Maria CARRILLO (Maria Ygnacia LOPEZ) was buried in the same fashion at the Mission in Sonoma."
According to the above second link: Maria Ygnacia LOPEZ, who was married to Juan Victor CARRILLO, is the daughter of Juan Francisco LOPEZ (brother of Claudio) and Maria Feleciana ARBALLO (who made the trek from Sonora with Juan Bautista de Anza and Father Pedro Font in 1776). I am the daughter of one of her brothers, Manuel Francisco LOPEZ. I have two living siblings, there were six girls. I would like to know more about my father's siblings. I am trying to trace family history. I read some parts of the California annals and found that a couple, Nicolas BERRELLEZA and his wife Isabella, were part of the de Anza Expedition. My great-grandfather had told me that his great-grandparents were from California. He didn't know much more. Now that he has passed, I am extremely curious to find out more about my family history. Do you have any leads I could follow in regards to the BERRELLEZA families?? [Daniel Berrelez (nonmember)]

According to Marie Northrop's Spanish-Mexican Families of Early California: 1769-1850, Vol. I, pp. 76-78: Nicolas Antonio BERREYESA enlisted as a poblador with Anza's 1776 Expedition and came to Alta California with his sister, Maria Isabel BERREYESA. He settled in San Francisco in 1777–1800 and was the Alta California founder of this family. The name has many variations in spelling. Northrop has a lot of information on Nicolas, his marriages, and his children and grandchildren. Your great-grandfather's name might help us in making a connection. [Benita H. I am seeking information on either Josephina SOTOMAYER (my great-grandmother), believed to be an Ohlone Mutson, and the father of her first children, Ambrosio ROSAS (believed to be Spanish). Both of them from the San Juan Bautista area. She was born at Piedra Azul, now called Blue Rocks Mountain. She was baptized at San Juan Bautista Mission. Not knowing her date of birth I have been unsuccessful in obtaining the baptism certificate. We believe she was born about 1875. She later moved to Hornitos and died in Los Banos in the early 1950s. As far as we know she was not married to Mr. ROSAS. [Abigail Martinez-Gonzalez (nonmember), Hanford, Calif.]

The Los Californianos records focus mainly on the period 1769 to 1848, although there are some descendant records for people who can trace their family lines back to this earlier Alta California time period. I would recommend that you start searching with Josephina's death certificate. I did not find a record for Josephina SOTOMAYER on the California Death Index, but your message suggests she may have married someone after her relationship with Ambrosio ROSAS, which would give her a different last name from SOTOMAYER or ROSAS on the index. The death certificate has an entry for date of birth. If the informant for the death record had accurate information, that would give you a guide for where to look for baptismal records. The death certificate also has entries for mother's name and father's name as well as other important information as you work your way back generation at a time.  You can see microfilm copies of the mission records at your local family history library. I checked their catalogue, and they do have Mission San Juan Batista records. Unfortunately, the baptismal registries only go up to 1873. If your Josephina was born after that, then there won't be a microfilm available to search. If you find from her death certificate, however, that she was born in 1873 or earlier, the microfilm number to order is 913309. [Judith Rodriguez (member), Fresno, Calif.]

My great-great-grandmother is Maria Antonia LUGO. I have run into a problem researching her. She married Jose Dolores SEPULVEDA (son of Jose Loreto SEPULVEDA) on 27 August 1862. I have the marriage certificate. The 1880 census shows Mara A SEPULVEDA with my great-grandfather Solomon at the right age along with brothers and sisters. Albertina being the eldest born in about 1863, is no longer in that census. I am about 99% sure this is the right Maria A SEPLVEDA (LUGO). Again in 1870 I find the same family, Sara, Marlain and Albertina, BUT in the 1900 census I show Joseph SEPULVEDA and Maria A with daughter Albertina born in 1888? The problem I am facing is in this 1900 census Maria A is listing her birth as June 1841. I had her down for January 1840 per the mission baptismal records online at Huntington Library. The ONLY Maria LUGO I can find with that date of birth is Maria Ysabella LUGO. This does not correspond with the marriage certificate. The 1890 census does have Dec 1835 for Joseph which would be correct. To make matters worse, my great-grandfather's (Solomon's) death certificate has his mother as Maria LUGO born in Pala, California. I am very confused. There is a story told recently that the Maria Antonio LUGO that I am looking for is actually a Pala Indian born about 1851, but this would then make her age wrong in the 1870 and 1880 census. I am looking for the correct date of birth and father and mother for Maria Antonia LUGO married to Jose Dolores de Jesus SEPULVEDA on 27 August 1862, mother of Solomon Dolores SEPULVEDA born 22 October 1873. Any help that can be given on this particular Maria LUGO would be greatly appreciated. [Nancy Nease (nonmember), Naknek, Alaska]

However, there are NO records of an Elizabeth/Lizzie RUIZ in Santa Barbara, yet I have a recording of my grandfather talking about visiting Elizabeth's mother in the adobe family home on or near State Street. It seems her mother Magdalena (?) may have been born (1842) to Francisco CAVALLERI and Maria DOMINGUEZ and might have married a (?) TARR. She was born in Pala, on the Indian Reservation as she was Indian. They were married at Mission San Juan Capistrano. I am looking for information from the early adult life of Estolano Fillippe LARIOS, son of Manuel LARIOS from San Juan Bautista. Estolano was married in about 1875 to Lillian (Letitia) BASSETT (sp.?). Family history says this took place in Tres Pinos, now Paicines. They had a child, Letitia LARIOS, who was born 2 March 1876, probably in San Francisco. The family later moved to Tres Pinos where Estolano's wife, Lillian (or Letitia), died in 1878, along with an unnamed infant girl, of smallpox and was buried in the Masonic Cemetery in San Francisco according to family information.
I am looking for verification of the name of Estolano LARIOS'S first wife and the mother of Letitia LARIOS, who was my grandmother. Family history show she was French Canadian, but nothing else has been recorded. I am also looking for information about the woman who raised Letitia LARIOS after the death of her mother. She was Caroline BOURBON. She may have been born in San Juan Bautista of Spanish parents. She later married Charles ELLIS and lived in San Francisco. She and Charles ELLIS adopted my grandmother, Letitia ELLIS LARIOS, and raised her from the age of four. Letitia LARIOS married William GADBERRY in 1902 in San Francisco. After Letitia died of tuberculosis in 1914, Caroline ("Auntie") who was widowed in 1914 also raised my mother, Lilah GADBERRY, and her two sisters, Ellis and Letitia.
The later life of Estolano LARIOS, his second and third wife and the children from his third marriage are well documented, but information about his first wife is sketchy due to her early death and lack of family records. Anything you can do to fill in the gaps will be appreciated. [Patricia Zajicek (not yet member), Glendale, Ariz.]

    Estolano
was the younger half-brother of my great-grandfather, Martin del Patricinio, born in 1850 to Manuel Salvador LARIOS y LINARES and his first wife, Maria Antonia del Carmen PACHECO y CANTUA. Patricinio married Helen MacDonald BEHAN. Estolano's mother was Rosario Armas de HIGUERA, Manuel Salvador's third wife. Estolano and Patricinio were the two remaining minor children when Manuel Salvador died in 1865. Estolano told of meeting Patricinio and Helen in Ralph Milliken's California Dons.
My father remembered Estolano visiting his family in Reno, Nev., when he was a child, in the 1920-30s. My sister, Francisca, just this past week found living descendants of Helen's sister. We know little about Patricinio's early adult life. Your inquiry includes details which might help us find more about him as well as Estolano. I am responding immediately to your inquiry and now have to take some time to plan the next step. I have forwarded your inquiry to my sister so I can discuss it with her. I am a descendant of Ygnacio RUIZ and his second wife, Benedita VALENCIA. I noticed in the baptismal records at the Huntington Library mission records that a Juana Juliana RUIZ was baptized at the age of eight at Mission San Juan Capistrano. Her father is listed as Ygnacio RUIZ and Maria Valeriana LORENZANO was listed as her mother. What I do not understand is that the record also lists father's spouse as Maria BORBON (GORGONA) (who was Ygnacio's first wife) and the mother's spouse as Desiderio YBARRA. Also in the record the recorder added a note that stated "Lo que manifesó bajo el secreto natural". My question is—was Juana Juliana a child of Ygnacio even though he was already married to Maria Gorgona VALENZUELA? [Jean Gurzi (nonmember), Riverside, Calif.]

Respuesta a Pregunta 415 - 2 March 2008
I have a possible answer to this question. María Valeriana LORENZANA married Diego YBARRA on 20 September 1807 at the San Diego Presidio. According to the christening record, she was already pregnant as her daughter Juana Juliana was born on 28 January 1808. The record states that she was christened "en peligro de muerte"—in danger of death—by corporal Cristóbal Domínguez. This was allowed by the Catholic church when a child, usually a newborn, was facing imminent death and no priest was at hand. Ignacio RUIZ was a married soldier at the presidio at the time. Since Juana Juliana was born only 4 months after her mother's marriage, the priest may have refused to complete her christening at the time ("suplí ceremonia" means "I completed the ceremony"). Ygnacio RUIZ married again in 1818, and may have confessed to being the father then, during the premarital questioning, and thus the church authorities may have agreed to having Juana Juliana's christening confirmed. As Juana Juliana YBARRA, she married Nicolás OLIVAS on 18 January 1824 at Mission San Gabriel. [Rondi Frankel (nonmember), Mexico City, Mexico]

I am doing some research on the ARCES of Baja, Sur. I am looking for the family of the members of the San Jose de Arces Rancho in or near La Purisima. We were the offspring of our father Joseph MAYORAL ARCE, born in 1912 in Nogales, Arizona. His parents were Francisco ARCE and Juana Guadalupe MAYORAL (born 1860 and 1875 in La Purisima, married in 1894 and had 10 children). Francisco's parents were Ramon ARCE and Rosa MAYORAL (born 1816? and Rosa's birth unknown). Juana Guadalupe's parents were Manuel MAYORAL and Carmen ARVISO (born in 1853 and 1859). Francisco was married before to Basilia Higuera ARCE and they had 6 children. Don't know ages or when married or what happened to Basilia and children. Thanks for any help you can give me on tracing my linage back to Villa Sinaloa. [Irene Barnett (nonmember)]

We have just recently discovered that my husband’s family lineage BOTILLER comes from France. The widow Agnes Rocha BOTILLER (she was born in Portugal) came to California with four children and married a Frank LAVAS, LAVIS, LAYVAS (not sure of the spelling) (possibly LEYVA). She had two more children by him, Loupie and Rafaella, and then she seems to have died (cannot find any records of her death 1900-1910). The BOTILLER children, Alexander (my husband’s grandfather), Sousa, Albert, and Thaddio, all scattered and presumably were adopted by other families? (Our last name should be BOTILLER but my husband’s mother made him take his step-dad's name). My question is that I would appreciate any information on Thaddio BOTILLER who also has disappeared with no death record and Agnes. Thank you. By the way we do have some wonderful photographs we will love to share with your group as we used to take his grandparents to many Los Californianos functions. [Kathy Beebe (nonmember), Charlotte, N.C.]

Pregunta 413 UPDATE - 6 March 2007
Just found out my husband's grandfather Alexander BOTILLER'S death certificate lists his mother's maiden name as ROCHA.  Remember, I said he was supposedly adopted so I am not sure if this is his real mother's maiden name or his adopted mother's. He was born in 1893 and died in 1989. He had a brother, Albert, and a sister, Suzy BAQUE.  He and his wife, Clorinda, were in the Los Californios Club (I remember taking them to the meetings at Ms. Mata's (sp) house near the beach back in the mid 70s. Bottom line is we are trying to find who we really are. Our name is not BOTILLER because my husband's stepfather adopted him so we are BEEBES, but not really, and BOTILLERS, but not really. Any help is much appreciated. Are there any resources for adoption papers for the early 1900s? [Kathy Beebe (nonmember), Charlotte, N.C.]

I just found your site and I need help with California-Mexican research. My great-great-grandmother was born in California about 1834. I have found her name, her parents' names, and where they lived. Felipa LA PORTILLA supposedly was a "ward" of Pio PICO.  Her parents lived in San Luis Rey, San Diego, Calif. Their names were Don Pablo y Teadora ROBLES. That is all I have found and I can't find anyone that can help me with pre-statehood research. Any help would be appreciated and I am willing to join your organization. [Dian Price (nonmember)]

Looking for further information on the parents of Henry August NIEBLA born 17 August 1881 (in Calif.), died 21 February 1957 (in Santa Clara, Calif.). His mother is listed on his death certificate as Vicenta SANCHEZ born in California. We are hoping this is our Vicenta SANCHEZ, daughter of Don José María SÁNCHEZ and Doña Encarnación ORTEGA. We have traced María Verónica Vicenta SÁNCHEZ through her marriages to Dan WILLSON (6 children), David Allen HILDEBRAND (no known children), and Ancil J. HENDRICKS (4 known children). Our quest to learn what happened to Vicenta after she left Dan WILLSON started over 40 years ago. Any information will be most appreciated. Henry NIEBLA married Theresa Maria MORALES about 1913 and had children: Alfred Henry (born 1914, died 1981), Clarice G. (born 1915, died 1984, married a Bryant), Irvin Vincent (born 1918, died 1987), Robert Victor (born 1921, died 1968), and Evelynn or Evaline Marie (born 1925), and probably Richard (born 1933). All of these children were born and died in the Santa Clara and Monterey areas. In 1918 Henry August lived in Gilroy with an address of Pacheco Pass. We would be so happy to hear from any descendants of Henry NIEBLA to learn what they know of Henry's mother and father. [Benita Gray & Pam Parsons (members), San Diego, Calif.]
