My great grandmother, Rose Marie Miramontes (maiden name) was the daughter of Emilio Miramontes and Victoria Guerena. Emilio was the son of Candelario Miramontes.  I understand that somewhere back there a Spanish land grant in the Half Moon Bay area was given to the family, but someone donated it to the Catholic church.  I'd love to know more about my ancestors, so if anyone knows anything, please email me!  blackblazer09@yahoo.com [Victoria Miramontes (nonmember), Pittsburg, Calif.] Note: please send a copy to LaTejedora@loscalifornianos.com so we can publish it. Often, there are others who would be interested in any Respuestas. A Jose Vicente Miramontes owned Rancho Miramontes at Half Moon Bay in 1853. Perhaps a reader can make the connection for Victoria. Respuesta a Pregunta 239 - 17 February 2005

According to Marie Northrop's Spanish-Mexican Families of Early California, 1769-1850, Vol. II, pp. 116-118:
Miguel Antonio Guillen [born about 1768 at Real de Cedros, Sonora, Mexico of Isidoro Guillen and Maria Gertrudis Duarte; buried 7 July 1819 at Mission San Gabriel] married Eulalia Perez [born about 1768 at Loreto, Baja California, Mexico of Diego Perez and Antonia Rosalia Cota; died 11 June 1878; buried June 1878 at Mission San Gabriel] about 1789 at Loreto. They had twelve children born between about 1790 and 21 May 1817. The first four were born at Loreto; the rest were baptized at San Diego except for the eleventh, who was baptized at Mission San Gabriel. Miguel was a guard at the San Diego Presidio in 1803. Eulalia married second Juan Mariner (Marine') at Mission San Gabriel 11 June 1878. [Benita H. Gray (member), San Diego, Calif.]

Pregunta 237 - 13 February 2005

My name is Cathleen Tico and I am a descendant of Maria Marcela Bojorques and her second husband, John Slert. I was wondering if you have any information on her granddaughter Francis Goodwin. I am inquiring because I have fond memories of Francis Goodwin as a child, and would like to visit her gravesite or speak to one of her relatives. Francis had eight brothers, but left the bulk of her estate to my grandmother, Mamie Tico. Francis was a sweet lady who spoke proudly of her Indian heritage--my mother remembers her as California Indian, but my sister insists that she proclaimed herself a Hopi. Francis' grandfather was J. Lopez, Maria's first husband. I know that this is a real long shot -- I can't find any record of Francis -- but I intend to continue looking for her because she deserves the effort. I will understand if you are too busy to respond or cannot find any information, but I thought that I would just "put it out there." Sincerely, Cathleen Tico [La Tejedora has no information, but thought someone "out there" might.]

UPDATE - 18 February 2006

For those of you interested in my quest to find Frances Lopez Goodwin, here is an update: Frances, along with her brothers Joe and Henry, are listed in the 1900 census as "inmates" of the Boys and Girls Aid Society of Los Angeles County, Orphan's Home. The Lopez children are shown to have been born in California, but their parent's place of birth is stated as "unknown." There is an interesting note handwritten on the form and it states: "Children in this institution mostly preferred life on streets, and no record is kept of their birthplace, and in most cases, none or generally little is known as to their past or family history." I did assume that Frances had been an adopted child; I  remember her as not resembling anyone else in the family, and could not find any family record.

I apologize for misleading anyone as to her ancestry. By the way, while the census lists her as white, she was most certainly Indian, American Indian, as my family quite clearly remembers.
The link to my family? Frances and my Grandmother Mamie were great friends, lifelong friends, and Frances and her husband Max Goodwin came by every Sunday to pick up my Grandmother and take her to their home on Grand Avenue in Venice. There they would have dinner and watch the roller derby. I will continue my detective work on Frances--this is all quite fascinating on both a personal and historical level. And most importantly, nice people deserve to be remembered. [Cathleen Tico  (nonmember), Los Angeles, Calif.]

Update of Pregunta 237 - 17 February 2005

I have found Francis Goodwin's grave at Woodlawn Cemetery in Santa Monica. I thought there was a good chance to find her there since the old Santa Monica families are buried there, including M. Bojorques herself. Interestingly, a Jose Jesus Lopez (1855-1936) is buried right behind Madame Bojorques. Could this be Francis' father? The shocker of it all is that she doesn't have a marker. I don't understand this, I can only assume that my grandmother had given someone the task, and there was a miscommunication. Anyway, I will see to it that Francis will have a marker. I will be going back to arrange this within the next two weeks. It WILL get taken care of, I promise. Her date of birth is listed as 14 April 1891, and date of death at 30 November 1974. Another thought: we have an old tin type photo of M. Bojorques, and I must say, she looks to be either full-blooded Indian, or even part black. I know that many of the Anza colonizers were listed as either mestizo or mulatto--does anyone know for sure about her? Was Lopez a California Indian? I would be interested in knowing what Indian nation Madame Bojorques and J. Lopez belonged to. Sincerely, Cathleen Tico.

Pregunta 234 - 12 February 2005

I was recently given a family tree that dates back to the San Gabriel Mission. It indicates that I am Gabrielino Indian. My question: I can't seem to verify Felix Gonzales [born approximately 1831, died 1871] marrying Ramona Alvitre; nor Rita Bermudez marrying Jose Raymundo Alvitre. I can't seem to find documents on any family names to state race as Gabrielino Indian. Ramona Alvitre had a daughter named Marina. Marina Gonzales [born approximately 1869] married Encarnacion Andrade. Their daughter, Ramona Andrade, married John Ralph Alvarado. Their daughter, Vivian Alvarado [born approximately 1915], is my grandmother. My mother, Sylvia, is Vivian's daughter. Help! Any documents on this family tree??? [Susan Carmona (nonmember), Apple Valley, Calif.]

Pregunta 233 - 4 February 2005

Do you know who where the founders of the village of Peralta in Spain? If so, PLEASE tell me. I have often questioned who my great, great, great, great, great grandparents were. All I know is that her name was Mary Luisa Peralta. If you Know Anything, Please return the information to sender because this is my only way of contact over the Internet. Thank you. [Mandy S. (nonmember) from ?]

Respuesta a Pregunta 233 - 4 February 2005

I felt that I must respond to this message although the family line has not been located in Alta California before 1848. The Query itself brings up several points. First, unless the e-mail address is filled in on the submittal form, I have no way of contacting the person who sends it. The queries are forwarded to me from an Internet mail server so the messages do not have the return e-mail address of the originator unless the originator fills in the e-mail address box on the submittal form.

Second, for anyone to help find family lines, more information is needed. We do not know if Peralta is Mary Luisa's birth surname or her married surname. If it is her birth surname, there is still too little information.  We have neither a time nor a place reference to work from.

From Marie Northrop's Spanish-Mexican Families of Early California: 1769-1850, Vol. I, pp. 23 & 277, I have a Maria Luisa Peralta born 25 August 1790, baptized on the 27th at Mission Santa Clara. She married, first, Tomas Antonio Soto 28 November 1807 at Mission Dolores and, second, Jose de Jesus Alviso or Juan Ygnacio Alviso 22 February 1830 at Mission Santa Clara. She was buried 14 August 1865 at Mission Santa Clara. However, there is no way of knowing if this is the right Mary Luisa Peralta or not.

So, please, fill in the submittal form completely and include as much information in your Query as possible. The more information, the more likely someone can help you. La Tejedora

Pregunta 232 - 4 February 2005

We are looking for the parents of Pablo Reyes born 1847 in Los Angeles, Calif. He married Maria de Los Angeles Reyes, born 1850. They had a son, Maurice, born 1866, two sons named Pablo and a son named Angel. They show up in the 1880 Census. We have not been able to go back any further. They lived on Main Street, 4th ward, City of Los Angeles and he was a farmer. The Census indicates both Pablo's parents were born in California. Thank you for any information you can add to this search. [C. Reyes (nonmember), Loomis, Calif.]

Respuesta a Pregunta 232 - 8 September 2005

Just a thought - in the 1880 Census Pablo Reyes lives next door to Refugio Dominguez, widow of Angel Maria Reyes. In view of the dates, Pablo might be Angel's nephew. Angel was the son of Jacinto Reyes (1788, San Gabriel - 1837) and Antonia Machado (1793, Santa Barbara - 1863, Los Angeles). It might be worth pursuing. [Rondi Frankel (nonmember), Mexico City, Mexico]

Pregunta 231 - 21 January 2005

Hello, my name is Lucy Littlejohns. I am not sure whether you could help me or not, but are you aware of any Welsh Littlejohns' deriving from the Castros of California, as well as Scottish descendents. Many thanks. [Lucy Littlejohns (nonmember), South Wales]

Respuesta a Pregunta 231 - 4 February 2005

The Littlejohns of my Castro family are all from Scotland.  For excellent data on the Littlejohns, consult the Scottish OPR (Church of Scotland's parish records) that can be easily found in the Family History Centers of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormons).  They have excellent records.  You can locate a Center closest to you by going onto the Internet at http://www.familysearch.org.  There is a Littlejohn Family Forum also on the Internet.  It can be found at http://genforum.genealogy.com/littleljohn/ [Howard Lee Smith (member), Trinity, Fla.]
