Pregunta 270 -- 13 May 2005

In the 1900 Census of Santa Margarita Township of San Luis Obispo we have Francisco Carlon born March 1841, married to Juana ?. Their children are Maria, born April 1894; Santos, April 1895; Gregorio, born May 9, 1895; Eduarda, born October 1895; and Isaac, born June 1900.  I was wondering if anyone has information on this family.  I know the Carlon's all began with Goycochea, but how is the father Francisco related to the Santa Barbara family? Please email me at Jalbitre@aol.com for copies of several beautiful Carlon photos if interested but share your response with La Tejedora.  Thank you, [John  Albitre (member), Bakersfield Calif.]

Pregunta 262 - 15 April 2005

Hola mi primos y primas.
Is there anyone out there who was born with the last name of Estrada who can trace their lineage back to Jose Raimundo or Jose Mariano Estrada? Reason I ask is because my mother, who was born of this Estrada line, is now in her 89th year -- she will be 90 this coming December. She had no brothers and she is the last of her generation still living. I surely would like to know if anyone is out there that is going to carry on this blood line with the Estrada name. Surely with my great grandfather, Jose Guadalupe Rafael Papias Estrada having 5 brothers and his Uncle Jose Mariano Estrada having 6 male children there must be someone out there. I would sure like to get in touch with some of you.

I have been able to trace this family name back to Diego de Estrada (born about 1663)who married Gertrudis de Chavez (born 1671) and their son, Juan Nicholas, (born 1712) who married  Juana Morillo (born 1704). Juan and Juana's son, Jose Maria Estrada, ( born 1743) married Maria Josefa Ysabel Ruiz (born 1741). Jose and Maria's eldest son Jose Mariano (born 1784) married Maria Isabela Arguello (born 1769) and their younger son Jose Raimundo (born 1784) married Josefa Maria Vallejo (born 1794).

Again thanks in advance for any and all replies. estradahardy@direcway.com [Jimmie Hardy de Estrada (member), Winston, Ore.]

Respuesta a Preguntas 261 y 262 - 27 October 2005

Pregunta 261 - 15 April 2005

Hola mi amigos y relativos!

STATEMENT: The Rancho Santa Margarita, at Santa Margarita in San Luis Obispo County, Calif., which consisted of 4 leagues or 17,735 acres, was granted to Joaquin Estrada in 1841,and patented to him 9 April 1861.

NOW, I have a Jose "Joaquin" Tomas Estrada in my direct lineage. He is the son of Jose Raymundo Estrada who married Maria Josefa Vallejo; he is also the brother of my great grandfather Jose Guadalupe Rafael Papias Estrada. Now the big question is . . . is the Joaquin Estrada, grantee of the Rancho Santa Margarita, the same person as the above listed Jose Joaquin Tomas Estrada? If there is some substantial PROOF of the connection, what is it? And, if there is no connection, who is he, just who were his parents? Maybe Francisco Estrada and Ines Castro are his parents!?

My Joaquin would have only been 26 years old in 1841, which seems kind of young for a land grant. He was born in December of 1815 in Monterey and I believe he married Maria de Jesus (Jesuista) Fuentes, but I am not sure on that fact. The grantee, "Joaquin", of the Rancho is listed by Bancroft as being at Chualar in 1836, age 19 and single; Juez de paz at San Luis Obispo in 1845; and County Judge in 1853. It seems to me that most of the land grants were given to older retired or retiring soldiers -- like the grant to Jose Mariano who was 38 when he was granted the Rancho Buena Vista.  I realize that the Governor (1836-1842) Juan Bautista Alvarado was the half brother of Jose Julian Tomas Estrada, thus maybe he did grant this acreage to Jose Julian Tomas Estrada because of family preferences. There were several land grants to different members of the Estrada family by Alvarado. [

Also does anyone have any lineage on the children or the subsequent family of Joaquín, the son of Jose Raymundo, to share for my family tree. I will be eternally grateful!
Thanks in advance for any light that anyone might shed to me on this subject.

P.S. I want to publicly thank Mimi Lozano and Johanna for the wonderful assistance they have already given to me. [Jimmie Hardy de Estrada (member), Winston, Ore.]
