Pregunta 290 - 30 June 2005

I am trying to ascertain information about General Soto,  specifically how the Soto family acquired land in San Luis Obispo County in the area between Cambria/Cayucos and Paso Robles in the general area known as Adelaida. Was it a Mexican Land Grant ?  I think Arculono was born in 1830 and died in 1906.  In 1870 he married Dolores Graholoa (also known as Grijalva). Can you help me? [Nancyann Curtis-Dubost (nonmember), Adelaida, Calif.]

Pregunta 289 - 23 June 2005

I am searching for Patricio Chavez (Chaves), who was married in Los Angeles Plaza Church to Rosalia Chavez around 1853. [Eppie (nonmember), Alcalde, N.M.]

Respuesta a Pregunta 289 - 23 June 2005

Marie Northrop's Spanish-Mexican Families of Early California. Volume III: Los Pobladores de la Reina de los Angeles, p. 374 says Patricio Chávez was from New Mexico and that he married Maria Francisca Rosalia Zeferina Chávez 10 November 1835 in the Plaza Church. They had 6 children, all baptized in the Plaza Church between 1854 and 1866.

Pregunta 288 - 23 June 2005

Jose Gabriel Arce [born about 1724; died 1800] married Ana Gertrudis Velasco. The Respuesta to Pregunta 72 indicates her last name might be Velasquez.  Can anyone confirm her last name and parents?  In total Gabriel had 11 children by two marriages. I believe Ana Gertrudis Arce and Maria Gertrudis Arce are children of Gabriel Arce.  One Gertrudis married Peralta; the other married Ortega. Both married into families with California land grants. I would like confirmation of the names of Jose Gabriel's children. Thank you Webbow7@aol.com [Lesley (nonmember), Long Beach, Calif.]

Respuesta a Pregunta 288 - 23 June 2005

Referring to Pregunta 72, I was quoting from Marie Northrop and do not know for sure what she meant by the parenthetical Velasquez after Ana Gertrudis Velasco's name. It may be a reference to Thomas Workman Temple II, Temple Charts, 26 Jan 1963. Temple says her name is de Velázquez, but Antigua California, Antepasados Vol. II, and Gateway to Alta California cite numerous mission records, which all say her name is Velasco. In my own family tree, I call her Velasco. I do not have information on her parentage.

Marie Northrop's Spanish-Mexican Families of Early California: 1769-1850, vol. I, pp. 40-43 lists Jose Gabriel and Ana Gertrudis Velasco's children as follows:
Maria Josefa [born about 1760], Jose Joaquin [born about 1761], Maria Concepcion [born 17 December 1768], [Ana] Maria Gertrudis del Rosario [baptized 5 November 1771 at Mission Santa Gertrudis, Baja California; married Ygnacio Maria Ortega 31 May 1785 at Velicata, Baja California; buried 31 July 1821 at Mission San Juan Bautista], Jose Maria Gabiso [baptized 25 October 1774], Eleuterio Antonio Maria [baptized 4 March 1775], Jose Ygnacio [baptized 1 March 1778], Pedro Juan Bautista [baptized 25 February 1780]. By his second wife, Maria Josefa Aguilar, Jose Gabriel fathered three more children: Maria de la Luz Petra [baptized 20 November 1788], Feliz [baptized 16 January 1791], and Maria del Pilar [baptized 11 November 1792]. [Note: Gateway to Alta California has a slightly different order, but the same names.]

Jose Gabriel's second child, Jose Joaquin, married Maria Matilde Carrillo about 1778 in Loreto, Baja California. Their first child, Anna Gertrudis, was born about 1789 at Loreto and married Juan Pablo Peralta 25 August 1804 at Mission San Diego.

Pregunta 287 - 23 June 2005

Jose Velazquez was with Portolá on the first and second Expeditions to find Monterey, Calif.  His wife was Juana Garcia.  Requesting information as to the parents of Juana Garcia.  Children known are Francisca, who married Sebastian Arce (also with Portolá) and Anastasia Maria. Did the couple have any other children and where was Juana Garcia buried?  Jose Velazquez was born in 1717 and died 1785 and is buried at San Gabriel, California.  Thanks. Webbow7@aol.com [Lesley (nonmember), Long Beach, Calif.]

Respuesta a Pregunta 286 - 8 September 2005

Jose Velazquez was a widower by the time he arrived in California. Juana Garcia's parents are not known, she died in Sonora. Ives, Ronald, "Saga of a Borderland Soldier". [Rondi Frankel (nonmember), Mexico City, Mexico]

Pregunta 286 - 23 June 2005

I am researching the Francisco Abila family and, in particular, its Rancho Las Cienegas.  I am particularly interested in tracing ownership of the land after the death of Francisco circa 1832.  All I really know is that four of Francisco’s children (Januario Abila, Pedra Abila de Ramirez, Francisca Abila de Rimpau, and Louisa Abila de Garfias) were granted the patent to the Rancho Las Cienegas land in 1871.  I would like to know how the land was divided among the four siblings.  Additionally, I would like to know how, when, and under what circumstances the land passed out of family ownership.  Advance thanks for any information you can provide! [Colleen (nonmember), Los Angeles, Calif.]

Pregunta 285 - 17 June 2005

I am interested in the family history of Maria Petra Vasquez and her relationship to Aman Espinosa who is shown living with her at age 7 in the 1880 California census.   Aman is my great great grandfather. The 1880 census lists Petra as 80 years old.  Could you give me any history on Petra? [Jeri Bray Paradise (nonmember), San Jose, Calif.]

UPDATE - 23 June 2005

Thanks you very much for this help.   Is there also any information on Guadalupe Bee?   He is also supposed to be related to Vasquez and my Aman is also shown in the 1880 census as his nephew.   The Bandit Vasquez was Mrs. Guadalupe Bee's nephew or cousin.

Respuesta a Pregunta 285 - 30 August 2008

More search is needed because Benito Roble's parents were not Jose Antonio Nieves Robles  and Maria Petra Vasquez because  Jose Antonio de los Nieves died in 1822, only a few months after he had taken as a bride, Petra Vasquez.  His son Policarpio, was born after Jose Antonio’s death. [Robert Stone (nonmember), Auburn, Calif.]

Respuesta a Pregunta 285 - 17 June 2005

According to Marie Northrop's Spanish-Mexican Families of Early California: 1769-1850, vol. II, pp. 315-317:

Maria Petra Vasquez [born 1 August 1800 of Tiburcio Vasquez and Ana Maria Antonia Bojorquez; baptized 2 August 1800 at Mission Santa Clara] married 16 June 1822 at Mission Santa Clara to Jose Antonio Nieves Robles [age 24 years]. Tiburcio [born about 1755 at Agualulco, Guadalajara, Mexico of Juan Atanasio Vasquez and Maria Gertrudis Castelo; buried 28 October 1827 at Mission Santa Clara] married 26 October 1775 at Mission San Javier del Bac, Sonora, Mexico to Ana Maria Antonia Bojorquez [born about 1760 at Villa de Sinaloa, Sinaloa of Jose Ramon Bojorquez and Maria Francisco Romero; buried 7 May 1827 at Mission Santa Clara]. They had 13 children between 1776 and 1802. Petra was the next to last. Tiburcio came with his parents to Alta California with Anza in 1775. He was poblador at San Francisco 1776; poblador at San Jose 1777; living at San Jose 1790, 1792, 1794, 1799; and alcalde at San Jose 1802, 1807. His grandson was the bandit, Tiburcio Vasquez.

Pregunta 284 - 17 June 2005

I am researching the land that was once the Rancho Las Cienegas in Los Angeles.  I know that the patent was granted in 1871 to Francisco Abila's children Januario Abila, Pedra Abila de Ramirez, Francisca Abila de Rimpau, and Louisa Abila de Garfias.  What I'd like to know is how the land was divided among them along with any information anyone has regarding to whom and when each sibling sold their holdings. [Colleen (nonmember), Los Angeles, Calif.]

Pregunta 283 - 17 June 2005

My father, Jose Enrique Leon, was born in 1905. His mother, Lugarda Alvarado, was born in the 1880s. Who was her father? Which of Juan B. Alvarado's children is my great grandparent? My second question: What happened to Juan B.'s mistress and all of her children? [Rose Alvarado Wood (not yet member), San Diego, Calif.]

Respuesta a Pregunta 283 - 8 November 2006

Maria Dolores Alvarado (born 1841) married Fenton Mercer Slaughter at Yorba Slaughter adobe. I would like information on Juan Nepomuceno Alvarado (married to Barbara Palomares 31 May 1812), my great, great, great, great, great grandfather,. and the names of all  their children and birth dates. Thank You [Michael James Smith (member), Burbank, Calif.]
Michael [Note: Marie Northrop, in Vol. 1 of Spanish-Mexican Families of Early California: 1769-1850, lists nine children  baptized between 1813 and 1828: Maria Tomasa Nepomucena Rafaela, Jose de Gracia, Francisco Maria, Mariano, Emerenciana Ignacia, Maria Concepcion, Maria Narcisa de la Merced, Maria Ramona de la Merced, and Jose de Isidro de la Asencion. Respuesta a Pregunta 283 - 27 October 2005

I believe all the early California Alvarados were probably  related, going back to a Miguel Alvarado author Harry Crosby sites in his book Antigua CaliforniaMiguel was born about 1815 and appears on the Loreto Muster roll of 1751.  It is believed that his five children were:
1. Juana Alvarado, who married a de la Cruz
2. Jose Bernardino Alvarado, who married Maria Teresa de Castro
3. Juan Bautista Alvarado, who married Maria Dolores de Castro (Teresa's sister)
4. Francisco Xavier Alvarado, who married Maria Ygnacia Amador
5. Maria Ygnacia Alvarado, who married Juan Ismerio de Osuna

All 5 of Miguel Alvarado's children have known descendants except Juana, who probably stayed in Baja. Juan Bautista, Miguel's second child, was the father of Josef Francisco Alvarado, who married Maria Josefa Vallejo.  Their son was the governor. You could be directly or indirectly related to him, but you'll need to get back a generation or two to find out.  I suggest requesting a certificate of death for your Lugarda Alvarado (who wasn't born in time to be the one to marry Palomares) ,which might give you her parent's names.  From there, try Marie Northrop's Spanish-Mexican Families volumes. Good luck, [Valerie (Alvarado) Hall (member), Fair Oaks, Calif.]

Respuesta a Pregunta 283 - 23 June 2005

According to Marie Northrop's Spanish Mexican Families of Early California:  Vol. III, Los Pobladores de la Reina de Los Angeles, p. 63.
Francisco Palomares, baptized 4 October 1840 L.A. Plaza Church; married 16 January 1866 Rancho de la Buenavista, San Diego to María Lugarda de Jesús Alvarado.

According to Northrop Vol. II, p. 7.
Maria Lugarda de Jesus Alvarado baptized 9 January 1842 Los Angeles Plaza Church; daughter of Ysidro Maria Dolores Alvarado [baptized 19 September 1811 at Mission San Gabriel] and Maria Micaela Avila [born about 1816, daughter of Anastacio Avila and Juana Maria Ballesteros]. They were married November 1834 at Mission San Gabriel. Ysidro Maria's parents were Francisco Xavier Alvarado and Maria Ygnacia Amador.
Maria Lugarda had 5 siblings, Maria Dolores, baptized 11 April 1836; Maria Dolores, born about 1838; Tomas Dolores, baptized 26 Sept 1839; Andres, born January/February 1844; Jose Maria, baptized 12 May 1845. Ysidro married (2) Manuela Lorenzo Justiniana Avila (sister of wife #1). They had 7 children.

According to Northrop Vol. I, pp. 6- 8.
Francisco Xavier Alvarado and Maria Ygnacia Amador, had 15 children. Child #3, Juan Bautista Alvarado, baptized 18 May 1790, (not the governor) was the brother of Ysidro (Isidoro) child #15.  Juan Bautista Alvarado, born 1790, married 12 September 1809, Maria Raymunda Yorba.

So, from this I gather that unless Francisco Xavier Alvarado was some how related to Jose Francisco Alvarado, [the father of Juan Bautista Valentin Alvarado - Governor], I see no ties from this Lugarda to the Governor, my great great grandfather's 1/2 brother.
This Lugarda, [born 1842] would have to have been remarried and have given  birth at age 63 if Jose Enrique Leon [born 1905] were to be her son. Are you sure you are not missing a generation?

J. B. V. Alvarado, born 1809 - parents Jose Francisco Alvarado & Maria Josefa Vallejo / J. F. Alvarado - parents Juan Bautista Alvarado & Dolores Castro. [Jimmie Hardy de Estrada (member), Winston, Ore.]

Respuesta a Pregunta 283 - 17 June 2005

According to Marie Northrop's Spanish-Mexican Families of Early California: 1769-1850, vol. II, pp. 272-273:

Marie Raymunda Castillo [born 20 February 1813 of Jose Castillo and Serafina Sinoba; baptized 22 February at San Carlos De Monterey Capilla Real; died 17 August 1880 at Los Ojitos Rancho, Monterey] had 4 hijos naturales with Juan Bautista Alvarado between 1831 and 1841 all baptized at either the Presidio de Monterey (first two) or Mission San Carlos de Monterey (second two). On 13 November 1844 at Mission San Antonio she married Mariano de Jesus Soberanes as his second wife. They had 8 children (3 born before their marriage who were made legitimate by the marriage, as was the custom).  [Benita H. Gray (member), San Diego, Calif.]

Pregunta 282 - 5 June 2005

Hello, do you have any information on Antonio Maria Lugo, and also if he or anyone in his past/future family have any relationships with Father Jose Maria Lugo. [Manuel Lugo (nonmember), Wilmington, N.C.]

Respuesta a Pregunta 282 - 5 June 2005

You do not specify the time period when or place where your Antonio Maria Lugo lived so I do not know if my information applies. Marie Northrop's Spanish-Mexican Families of Early California: 1769-1850, vol. II, pp. 207-10 has information on an Antonio Maria Lugo as follows.

Antonio Maria Lugo [baptized 13 June 1778 at Mission San Antonio; 7th child, 4th son of Francisco Salvador de Lugo and Juana Maria Rita Martinez; buried 3 February 1860 at Los Angles Plaza Church] married first Maria Dolores Ruiz [born 20 May 1783 of Efigenio Ruiz and Maria Rosa Lopez (came in the 1781 Expedition to Alta California); baptized 28 May 1783 at Mission Santa Barbara; buried 14 March 1829 at Mission San Gabriel] on 17 January 1796 at Mission Santa Barbara. They had 13 children, including their third son and fourth child Jose Maria Lugo, but he married Maria Antonia Rendon (Avila) so is unlikely to be your Father Jose Maria Lugo. Antonio married second Maria Florentina de Jesus German [baptized 14 January 1828 at Mission San Gabriel; parents Manuel German and Felipa Ruiz] on 8 March 1842 at Mission San Gabriel. They had 8 children. Antonio Maria Lugo was grantee of Rancho San Antonio in 1810; alcalde at Los Angeles in 1816-18; juez de campo in 1833-34; member of ayuntamiento in 1837-38; grantee of Chino in 1841; and was the "most prominent of the Lugos in the Southland."  [Benita H. Gray (member), San Diego, Calif.]

Pregunta 281 - 5 June 2005

I am researching a documentary on early California settlers...I was at the ranch of John (Juan) Domingo. He was a white Dutchman and the Spaniards named him when they found him shipwrecked. He married into the Feliz family and I am trying to find out more about him. Thanks for any help you can give me. [Christina Greco (nonmember), Sherman Oaks, Calif.]
