Pregunta 320 - 5 November 2005

We are descendents of Rafael Garcia, 1790-1866, original Mexican land grant, Rancho Tomales y Baulines.  I'm looking for information to round out our family tree, such as, vital statistics of Garcias before and after Rafael. Thank You, [Laura Imhoff (nonmember)]

Respuesta a Pregunta 320 - 5 November 2005

Laura, you will note that the Tomales y Baulines land grant was a Mexican land grant, as were most of the California land grants. There was a Rafael Garcia who lived in Olema, Marin County, who, I am presuming is probably your Rafael, although my source [Marie Northrop's Spanish-Mexican Families of Early California 1769-1850, vol. I, pp. 159-161] gives his birth date as about 1799 at San Diego. His parents were Felipe Garcia (Romero) [born about 1748 at Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico of Jose Antonio Garcia and Maria Petrona Romero; buried 17 March 1817 at Mission San Carlos de Monterey] and Maria del Rosario Marquez [born about 1762 at Loreto, Baja California of Salvador Marquez and Maria de la Luz; buried 18 December 1813 at Mission San Diego] who married 17 November 1778 at Mission San Diego. Rafael was the 9th child of 12 and the 5th son of 6. Rafael married Maria Loreto Altamirano 16 August 1827 at Mission San Juan Bautista. He died 25 February 1866 at Olema. His wife was short to death in 1873 at Olema.

Felipe was one of three master carpenters brought from Mexico by Father Serra on the Santiago, which landed on 13 March 1774 at San Diego. He brought his mother [who died a year later] with him. He often preferred her name, so he was also known as Felipe Romero.

Pregunta 319 - 27 October 2005

I am interested in the Romeros of Santa Barbara and Santa [?]and Santa Ynes Mission area.
There was a Tomas Romero married to Felipa Lugo and they had a son named Jesus Demesio RomeroDemesio married Maria Rosa Ruiz, who was born about 1834, the daughter of Hilario Ruiz and Juliana Sinoba. Demesio Romero and Maria Rosa Ruiz had Adelaida, Teresa, Ines, Filena, and Juan B. Romero.  My chief interest is with Ines, who was born about 1864 in Los Alamos, Santa Barbara, and died in 1932 in Bakersfield.  Ines was married to Jesus Porcho, who brought his family to Bakersfield, and I was wondering if any of this sounds familiar to anyone.  Please include your response in Queries as well as your email to me at:  johnalbitre@sbcglobal.net . Thanks so much for your response.  [John Albitre (member), Bakersfield, Calif.]

Pregunta 317 - 27 October 2005

I am trying to trace the Aguilar family in Baja California and mainland Mexico prior to 1714.  Our known ancestors of that time are as follows:  Cayetano Aguilar was born about 1690 (possibly in Culiacan, Sinaloa) and came to Loreto, Baja California.  He married about 1714 but his wife's name is unknown to us (LDS archive materials list her as "Mistress Aguilar" only).  A child was Juan Antonio, born 1718 in Loreto.  Cayetano was listed on the payroll at Loreto in 1718.

Juan Antonio married Maria Dolores Montano in 1740 in Loreto.  Their children (that are known to us) were Francisco Javier and Luis Ignacio (born in 1740 and 1742).  Both Francisco and Luis participated in expeditions into Alta California and their descendents
settled in San Diego and the Los Angeles/San Gabriel areas.

If anyone has additional information about any of these people, especially Cayetano, I would greatly appreciate it. [Aguilar (nonmember), Elk Grove, Calif.]

Respuesta a Pregunta 315 - 27 October 2005

Gloria, I believe Maria de Jesus Yorba and Lugarda Yorba Silvas may be one and the same.  I have her in my files as Maria de Jesus Lugarda Yorba, but unfortunately do not have her parents.  I do have Jose Maria Silvas line back 6 generations, if you need it. [Valerie Hall (member), Fair Oaks, Calif.]

Pregunta 313 - 8 October 2005

My grandmother, Maria Bermudez Lujan, was a Cahuilla Indian whose grandparents were San Gabriel Mission Indians. After sharing a relative's genealogy information, I've learned that my relatives were part of the Jose de la Cruz Bermudez family of San Gabriel Mission. Some are buried there; some were born there; and some married there as well. It's all so confusing and I don't know where to begin. Please help. [Gloria Rojas (nonmember), West Covina, Calif.]

Respuesta a Pregunta 313 - 8 October 2005

You should collect the information you have from your relative and then I suggest you visit either the Southern California Genealogical Society (SCGS) Library at 417 Irving Drive, Burbank [hours: Tue. 10-9; Wed.-Fri., 1st & 2nd Sun., and 3rd & 4th Sat. 10-4] or your local Church of Latter Day Saints Family History Center [look in the phone book for a number to call]. There volunteers will be happy to help you get started. Also, in January, the Los Californianos will be meeting in San Diego and in April we meet in Ventura [check our Web site for details]. For $8 [$3 registration plus $5 library fee], you can use our Traveling Genealogy Library and get help there. La Tejedora

Pregunta 312 - 8 October 2005

In regard to the Respuesta a Pregunta 309: I know where your information came from, but I was wondering if the spelling of Caravajal could be Carabajal? My relative Rafael Carabajal was born in 1808 in Los Angeles. He died there in 1872. His son was born in 1843 in San Miguel Mission and married Juana Nepomucena Tapia 31 August 1870 at Mission Santa Cruz. His name was Jose Maria Carabajal. Juana's father was Jose Francisco Tapia and his father was Felipe Santiago Tapia. If you have any information on the Carabajals, it would be appreciated by me. Thank you in advance. It would seem logical that a Carabajal would be in Monterey if the family was around Santa Cruz. Gracias. [James T. Larson (member), El Paso de Robles, Calif.]

Respuesta a Pregunta 312 - 26 November 2005

I am looking for Carabajals as well.  I know that some of them came from California.  My family has been trying to locate more information on our ancestors but have been unsuccessful.  Hope you can help. simona_tyler@cox.net

Respuesta a Pregunta 312 - 8 October 2005

It is my experience that the letters "v" and "b" are often used interchangeably in Spanish names. In fact, such "alternative" spellings are common not only in early Spanish but also in early English. Spelling was not standardized until more recently. I have a copy of an early handwritten will where the author spells his own surname several different ways and I have documents where brothers spell their surnames differently. To say a family line is different simply because the surname spelling is different is a risky business.  I hope someone will respond with more information about the Caravajal/Carabajal family line(s). Pregunta 311 - 8 October 2005

Does anyone have any information about Maria Antonia Ybarra in Yerba Buena/San Francisco in the late 1800s. She lived in San Diego at one time. There is a book called the San Timeteo Canyon.  She left San Diego with her husband Francisco Albanez, who was a seaman, and friends to go to San Timeteo Canyon. There he was given a land grant. I know they were somehow connected to the Bernal family. Please respond. [Anita Robles (nonmember), San Jose, Calif.]
