Pregunta 330 - 2 January 2006

Seeking information of any kind regarding great grandfather Slyvestra Portillo. Family lore has it that he was an administrator (?) at the Mission San Luis Rey and received a land grant from the King of Spain for his efforts. We visited the mission many many years ago and saw an oil painting that said it depicted Portillo at the mission. Have e-mailed mission and have had no response. Plan to visit again after Dec. 25.Can you provide us with any guidelines in our quest??? Thank you. [Bob Winters (nonmember)]

Pregunta 329 - 2 January 2006

One of my great, great grandfathers was Mariano Garcia.  He married Soledad Vasquez at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Santa Barbara in 1852.  Their daughter, Tomasa Garcia de Moreno, was my great grandmother, who was born on 3 March 1864 in Santa Barbara (Montecito).  Mariano Garcia is listed in the Santa Barbara Census of 1860.  This is all the information I have regarding Mariano Garcia.  If any one has information regarding Mariano Garcia, we would be ever so grateful to hear from you. Thank you. [Lorri Frain (member), Mountain View, Calif.]

Pregunta 328 - 2 January 2006

Governor Jose Figueroa and food for thought.  In the exact year Governor Figueroa was born  1792 - a Josef Pio (may have also been called Jose Piedad Figueroa) is born in Oquitoa, Sonora, Mexico to Ygnacio Figueroa and Ygnacia Garcia de Figueroa. Also born to this family is a Maria Guadalupe Barbara Figueroa. Is it possible this [Josef Pio] is our Governor Figueroa? Many Jose's are called by their middle name could it be Governor Figueroa used his first name not particularly liking the middle? Both Ygnacio and Ygnacia are orphans. Her father, however, was a military man of Altar, Sonora, Mexico and both she and Ygnacio are educated. I am hopeful that at some point a great California historian will decide we should know something about this California governor and pick up his early trail. Who was this man? I'd also like to add that I have been translating the Oquitoa baptism records late 1780s-1816. In the event anyone thinks they had relatives in the area I'd be happy to check!

This does not particularly relate to California but involves two common surnames and may be helpful to Ortiz and Lopez descendants. In translating the Oquitoa records I could trace the evolution of these two names in the area. The first Ortiz in the area was actually two- fold, that is Ortiz Cortez.  Later only Ortiz was used in the records.  This Ortiz by the way is a Don but the wife is not a Doņa - looks like she may have Indian blood.  The Lopez names were defined as being Lopez de Xeres (a place name I believe) also written as Lopez de Aros. Later the name is either just Lopez or Aros. Aros does not appear to be a name at all but a misspelling of the name Xeres. [Lesley (nonmember), Long Beach, Calif.]

Pregunta 327 - 2 January 2006

My grandfather, Juan C. Marron, was born in Dulzura, Calif. He married Martina Crosthwaite from Baja California, Mexico. My great grandparents were Juan Maria Marron and Matilda Ames but I could never find out who my great great parents are, on the Marron side. My great great grandparents from my mother's side, were Perfecta Espinosa and Julian Ames and the other couple were Phillip Crosthwaite and Josefa Lopez and all four of them lived at San Diego Old Town prior to 1848. I would appreciate any help on the Marrons very much. Thank you. [ Rigo M. del Campo (nonmember), Chula Vista, Calif.].

Pregunta 326 - 14 December 2005

I am seeking information regarding the marriage of my grandmother, Margarita Viviana Espinosa, to Jose Bonifacio Rico [born 14 May 1860 in California]. My grandmother's birth date is 22 February 1861. My grandmother is the daughter of Josefa de los Santos Boronda [born 1826] and Carlos Cayetano Espinosa [born 1815 in Soledad, Monterey, County]. Thank you. [Marilyn Crovo (applicant), Citrus Heights, Calif.]

Respuesta a Pregunta 326 - 7 April 2006

Dear Marilyn, See family tree charts on the wall inside Casa Boronda, records on Josepha at Soledad Mission, Carlos Cayetano Espinosa at Mission San Carlos Borremo in Carmel. (See his looking glass and leather shield and lance in Museum.) I suggest you visit Monterey County Historical Society. I'm the first in 13 generations to live off of their Rancho Bolsa de Escarpines and Rancho Los Gatos/Santa Rita. [Teresa Russell y Espinosa de Boronda (nonmember), Long Beach, Calif.]

Pregunta 325 - 14 December 2005

I am preparing to submit my pedigree to Los Californianos. My brother, Calvin Merz, was a member. He died in 1996. The name "Gonzales" is listed among his family names. I do not show that name on a family tree compiled by my cousin, Ernest Kohlmeister, also a member. Can anyone help me find the Gonzales connection? Thank you. [Marilyn Crovo (applicant), Citrus Heights, Calif.]

Pregunta 324 - 14 December 2005

My great grandmother was Marie Cantua Moreno, member #273. She died in 1991.  I would like to know more about my family line. She had extensive files on our genealogy, however, they seem to have disappeared after her death. I would appreciate any information on her family lines. [Karla Schafer (nonmember), Toledo, Ore.]]

Wanting to know Anastacio Garcia's brothers' and sisters' names, births and parents.
Anastacio Garcia is the one who was related to Tiburcio Vasquez in Monterey. The one who was hung in the Monterey jail. Is Manuel Garcia his brother? Thank You. [Patsy Castro de Ludwig (nonmember), San Jose, Calif.]

Seeking to contact Patsy Mendoza Castro de Ludwig regarding 1822 Chihuahua Census.  dalucetx@hotmail.com [Dan Luc (nonmember), Dallas/Fort Worth, Tex.]

Respuesta a Pregunta 323 - 7 April 2006

I think Anastacio Garcia was a friend of Tiburcio Vasquez bandido extraordinaire. (Friends and neighbors in Monterey loved Vasquez and did not hang him.) Is it possible the people in San Jose threw the noose on Tiburcio Vasquez?

Manual Garcia, a son in law of Doņa Encarnacion Avila, was granted Rancho Rincon de San Pascualin 1843.

Vasquez had many routes and many welcoming friends and hideouts up and down the state, from his hometown (where he was educated) in Monterey to Los Angeles to San Juan Capistrano, where the HUGE Tiburcio Vasquez tree is still standing in his honor. Vasquez was very handsome and very popular with the ladies. There are many entertaining stories of this man. Friends had fresh horses waiting for him. Women brought him food and flowers. He escaped jail (alleged cattle rustling), survived bullet wounds (one to his chest), and survived other tough situations. [Teresa Russell y Espinosa de Boronda (nonmember). Long Beach, Calif.]

According to Marie Northrop's Spanish-Mexican Families of Early California: 1769-1850, Volume II, p. 288, I can only find that a Anastacio Garcia killed Jose Joaquin Carmen de la Torre in November 1855 near Santa Barbara. They say Jose was trying to arrest Anastacio Garcia, a murderer, when Anastacio killed Jose. This Anastacio sounds like the one you are looking for. According to p. 96, a Agustin Anastacio Garcia was baptized 18 August 1834 at Mission San Juan Bautista. His brother was Manuel Garcia baptized 18 December 1823 at Mission San Juan Bautista and buried 22 September 1854 at Mission San Luis Obispo. De La Torre and Tiburcio Vasquez were my relatives. Among the 340 Baja California Sur refugees evacuated from La Paz and San Jose del Cabo by the New York Volunteers at the end of the Mexican War for being American sympathizers were members of the Smith and Duarte families. The refugees arrived in Monterey in October 1848. Many of them are listed in the 1850 U.S. Census for Monterey County.

All of the Mexican national evacuees in the 1850 Monterey Census have the notation "Lower CA" listed as their birthplace. They were all automatically granted naturalized American citizenship by the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo.

Some of the evacuees married New York Volunteers, some married among themselves, some married Alta California area Californios, and some married gold rush immigrants.

When the Great Register [voter registration] started in 1866 [per California law], all male evacuees over the age of 21 who registered, have the notation "By Treaty" under the columns requesting where and when naturalized.

A free transcription of the U.S. 1850 Census for Monterey County is available at the Monterey County, Calif. genealogy site.

Hope this helps. [Anita Mason (Historian Member), Monterey, Calif.]

Pregunta 322 - 26 November 2005

Who was Governor Jose Figueroa, 1792-1835? Before he was the governor of California he was commanding general of Sonora/Sinaloa. Where was he born, who were his parents, siblings?  Bancroft index states when he died two sons living in Mexico came forward to claim his estate.  Who were these sons and were they successful?  Appears nothing is known of Governor Figueroa's family yet, some claim he was California's greatest governor. [Lesley (nonmember), Long Beach, Calif.]

UPDATE Pregunta 322 - 14 December 2005

More on Governor Jose Figueroa.  Sorry, looks like it was his sister Guadalupe who claimed a portion of the estate for her two sons. According to Bancroft Index the estate took 25 years to settle.  Further, a Juan Andres Martin married Josefa Figueroa  in 1844, San Gabriel Mission Record and in the record it claims Josefa is the daughter of Ramon Figueroa and of Filamena Duarte. I see where some claim Ramon is the son of Governor Figueroa.  Seems to me if he had legitimate heirs his estate could have been settled in a timely fashion . . . and not involved a sister.  Bet he never married! [Lesley (nonmember), Long Beach, Calif.]

Pregunta 321 - 26 November 2005

I am supposed to be descended from Don Jose Antonio Yorba. My grandmother was Juanita McGlynn, daughter of Juvenia Yorba Wence.  My grandmother died before I was born and I have had some difficulty discovering my family history.  If there is any information you may be able to supply me it would be greatly appreciated. [Patric McGlynn (nonmember), Calif.]

Pregunta 321 - 26 November 2005

I am interested in anyone who is researching Talamantes-Farias. My paternal side is from Culver City, Calif. area. My paternal side is Yorba and Peralta. Both are early mid-1700s, early California families and both land grant holders. The first settler was Luis Felipe Talamantes and his wife, Eldefonza [Ildefonsa] Avila. On the other side are Jose Antonio Yorba, who married a Grijalva [Maria Josefa]. They are my great great great grandparents. Get in touch with me at evabooher@aol.com so we can share.
