Pregunta 350 - 7 April 2006
My father is Michael
Aguilar and his father had the same name. his grand father
was Demitrio
Aguilar. His mother, who he never knew because she died
when he was a child, was Aurora
Morales. She is of an old family, many are buried in the
San Gabriel Mission. Is there any more information on my family as they are
believed to be early Californios. Thanks. [Chris Aguilar (nonmember)]
Pregunta 349 - 7 April 2006
I would appreciate anyone with any information on the Arellanes
family. I have a lot, but I am gathering more because we are going to do some
articles for a local newspaper. We are interested in Jose
Teodoro, Jose
Regino, Jose
Antonio Martin, and Luis
Gonzaga Antonio Severo Arellanes. We are also wondering
about the Santa Agueda Creek just prior to the Santa Inez River on the road to
Santa Barbara. We think it could be named after Teodoro's
mother, Maria Agueda Lopez de Haro. Any
information will be welcomed by me, James T. Larson, Member. My E-mail is jam8lrs@aol.com
if you want to contact me direct or go through Los Californianos web site.

Pregunta 348 - 17 March 2006 DATE OUT OF ORDER
Hello, I've been researching my family line of Castro
and have had a very hard time of it. I'm researching Blas
Castro, who married an Indian named Refugia
about 1850. Census records are very unclear of his age, ranging for a
birth from 1813 to 1821. Children of the couple were Leodore
Castro, Modesta
Castro (my ancestor), Manuel
Castro, Vincent
Castro, Isabel
Castro, Blas
Castro, and Eralinda
Castro. This family resided in San Luis Obispo county.
I can find them in the 1860 and 1870 census records in this county. I
would greatly appreciate any information on this family and if they are
related to any of you wonderful folk. Thank you so very much for your
time and any help that can be given. [Jolene Osmun (nonmember), Osseo,

Pregunta 347 - 7 April 2006
Does anyone has the Hojas de Servicio for
Jose
Maria Gongora,
who married Maria
Rosalia Maximimiana Verdugo in 1776 at San Diego?
In particular, I am searching for his date of birth, even
just the year. I have parentage. [Harry Crosby (member), San Diego,

Pregunta 346 - 17 March 2006
Does anyone have information on Don Bonifacio
Madariago, third husband of Doña Maria
Josefa Vallejo? They had two children Maria
Dolores Rosalia Louisa Madariago and Jose
Francisco Madariago. Are there any descendants of this
family still living? Bonifacio
Madariago came from Mexico City, but there are also
relatives from Chili. [Helen B. Collins (member), San Jose, Calif.]
Respuesta a Pregunta 346 - 7 April 2006
Maria Josefa
de Vallejo y Estrada y Madriaga is my great great grandmother,
the wife of Jose
Raimundo Estrada. After the death of Jose
Raimundo in October 1830, as you know, she married to Bonifacio
Madriaga 12 May 1831 (the son of Francisco
Madraga and wife Joaquina
Gomez (Gonzales)).
Bonifacio
was born about 1809 in Mexico City; he died 28 December 1836 and is buried
at the Mission San Carlos Cemetery in Monterey. You mention that they had 2
children. I have made reference to 4 children. Northrop, Vol. III, page 175
places 3, Maria
de los Dolores Rosaria, born 18 September 1831 at
Monterey; Jose
Francisco German, born June 1833 at Monterey; Tomas,
born 15 May 1835 at Monterey; and I have further information on a 4th child,
Jose Antonio
Demetrio, born 22 December 1836. He was baptized 30 December
1836 after the death of his mother, probable cause of death being child
birth complications. I suspect that Maria
and Bonifacio
were both to raise the children of the Estrada marriage as the first child
born to that marriage was in 1813 and the last in 1828 making them 17
to 8 years old, even though the last child died in July of 1830. But my great
grandfather was age 10 at the time of the marriage to Bonifacio
in 1830.
Bonifacio
Madriaga was an escribano (clerk) national y publico de la
Ciudad de Mexico.
Further reference to
Bonifacio Madriaga; H. H. Bancroft, History of
California, Volume IV, page 727 (index) "Madriaga
(Bonifacio), Mex. Clerk at Monterey from about '30; comis.
de policia and regidor in '36-7. iii. 675. In '36 age 27, wife Josefa
Vallejo de Estrada (mother of Gov. Alvarado), Children, Dolores b. '32,
Francisco b.'33. He went to Mexico in '42."
Have you tried GOOGLING the name
Bonifacio Madriaga to see what comes up? You might be
surprised! [Jimmie Hardy (member), Winston, Ore.]
Pregunta 345 - 17 March 2006
The only sure things I know about my family name is that my grandfather was
born in TinTown (Bisbee), Arizona. His name was Juan
[Moraga] and his father's name was Juan.
It's a typical first name, but not so typical a last name. My
grandfather was born in 1915 and his father was born in the late 1870-early
1880s. Does anyone know of any connection between these Arizona Moragas
and the California ones? Should I assume that they all came from the
same lineage (Joaquin
and Jose mentioned
in Pregunta 26)
from the 1700s? [Andrew J. Moraga (nonmember), Whittier, Calif.]
Respuesta a Pregunta 345 - 21 August 2008
To Andrew and Frankie Moraga: My husband's family came from Maricopa County,
Arizona as well. His great grandfather was a man named
Carmen Moraga (born
around 1885) who married a woman named
Carmen Noriega (born around
1893). I believe
Carmen Noriega's
parents to be
Pedro Noriega and
Paulina Posada, both
born in 1860 in Mexico. According to census records,
Carmen Moraga's
parents were also born in Mexico. I was hoping that one of you would know if
this
Carmen Moraga could
be related to your Arizona
Moragas? Possible
siblings include:
Ramon Moraga (born
1890),
Alejandro Moraga (born 1879), and
Martina Moraga.
Andrew mentioned a
Joaquin Moraga who
married
Rafeala Tellas?
Their great granddaughter has been in contact with me and believes
Joaquin to be
Carmen's uncle. I
just haven't been able to find the connection. Thanks, [Kelly Moraga

Respuesta a Pregunta 345 - 1 July 2006
Andrew, this is your cousin Frankie again. I found grandpa’s birth
certificate and it names him as
Juan de Dios Moraga. It also confirms Juan
Moraga and Carmen
Garcia as his parents. I additionally found birth
certificates that I believe are of our great-aunts, Carmen
Nicolasa Moraga and Altagracia
Moraga, because they also have
Juan Moraga and Carmen
Garcia as parents. All of their births happened in
Cochise County, which includes the towns of Lowell and Bisbee (Tintown).
One shows great-grandpa Juan’s
birthplace as being in Fronteras, Sonora. However, the
dates on these birth certificates are questionable as they show great-grandpa Juan
Moraga dead by 1917. What’s more confusing is that I
found a death certificate of a Juan
Moraga who was born in 1876 and died in 1930 in Cochise
County. He was also born in Fronteras, Sonora. His parents are
named as Juan
Moraga and Lucia
Arvisu. This might be the best lead yet, but I will
try to investigate this further. [Frank Moraga (nonmember),
Anaheim, Calif.]
Respuesta a Pregunta 345 - 23 June 2006
Hello cousin. This is your cousin Frankie
over here in Orange County. I too have been doing some Moraga
research on my spare time and I actually found the marriage record of our
great-grandpa Juan.
His record shows great-grandma’s name as
Carmen Garcia, which I confirmed with grandma Lucy.
The record also indicates that they lived in Lowell, Arizona, which I believe
is in Cochise County. I found what may be some leads to
great-grandpa’s parents through some other records as well. The first
one is of a Joaquin
Moraga and a Rafaela
Telles, who were married on 21 April 1887 in Pinal County.
The second record is of a Jesus
Moraga and Juana
Ochoa who were married 16 January 1891 in the same county.
I don’t know if they have any connection to our grandpa’s lineage but it
may shed some light on where our family stems from. I’ll keep in
touch. [Frank L. Moraga (nonmember), Anaheim, Calif.]

I am looking for a Manuel
Ybarra (or variations of that name) married to Maria
de la Luz, date around 1850-1860s. They both died in Santa
Barbara. Maria
de la Luz was a Chumash Indian born in Santa Ynez in August
1843. Does anyone have any information? [Kathy Pappo (nonmember), Rancho Palos

Pregunta 341 - 19 February 2006
Hello, I am looking for information on Maria
Sara Lugo the daughter of Maria
Flortina German (the second wife of
Antonio Maria Lugo). Maria
Sara married Sacramento
Feliz. They are my great great grandparents. I would like
more information on both. I found one piece of documentation on their marriage
but I cannot find anything else. Could you please help me or give me some
direction. Thank you. [Eugenia Pineda (nonmember), Ventura, Calif.]
