Pregunta 360 - 3 June 2006

Can anyone tell me if these people are related to Francisco Lugo and Juana Maria Rita [Martinez] Lugo? Adolph Lugo born 1865, how is he connected? His father is Prospero and his grandfather, I think, is Jose Ignacio Lugo? Also Vincent Lugo born 23 March 1863, married to Louisa Leon? Also Ysidro Lugo, year of birth 1864. I think his wife's name is Margaret Thomas. His dad might be Patricio Lugo? And his dad, Nichlos Lugo? And Agnes Lugo, I think her dad is Leonicio Lugo? And his father is Fernando Lugo? Also Remijio Lugo, I am not sure on his date of birth, but he was married to Angelita Barker. I think she was born in 1876? How are Remijio Lugo, and the other Lugos I mentioned related to Francisco and Juana María. Please help me with the lost ends of my family tree. Thank you. [Lisa (nonmember), SA, Calif.

Pregunta 359 - 19 May 2006

I am looking for any information about my 3rd great grandfather, Jesus Romero. He was born around 1855 and he married a Dolores Camacho who was born around 1858. Jesus and Dolores had a few children: Alejandro, Maria, Bernarda, Buenaventura, Epifanio, and Dolores and I believe there was a few more. Alejandro was the oldest. He was born in 1873. They were based in the Whittier area of Los Angeles. I would also like information about the Camacho side. [Jackie (nonmember), Camarillo, Calif.]

In regards to Jesus Romero, my great grandparents are Jose de Jesus Romero and Dolores Camacho Romero. He was born in 1855 in Los Angeles, Calif. She was born in 1858 in Sonora, Mexico. Her other spouse was Nester Aguayo. Their children were Alexander and Epifanio Camacho Romero (my grandfather), Mary (Maria) Cenarda, and Ben Romero. Hope this helps. I have more information. Dolores Camacho Romero is buried at Little Lake in Santa Fe Springs, Calif.  [Angie Romero Escobedo (nonmember), Perris, Calif.]

Respuesta a Pregunta 359 - 23 June 2006

Dolores Camacho was my paternal great grandmother.  She married again to Nestor Aguayo by a justice of the peace in 1886 in Azusa.  He was my paternal great grandfather.  I know of Alejandro, Epifanio, Maria, and Bernarda.  I don't know of any other children by Jesus Romero nor do I know when he passed away. They do appear in the 1880 census in Los Angeles.  My father told me he would go with his dad to visit his sister in Camarillo. [Maria Rubal/G.Tafoya (nonmember), Whittier, Calif.]

Pregunta 358 - 19 May 2006

We are searching for a link backwards to our Vasquez familia. My grandfather was born in Knightsen, son of Faustino Vasquez. His father Refiesuillio Vasquez was born in Mexico, and said to have returned to San Jose in search of his brother, Tiburcio - the bandit. According to the tales of The Bandit, he was indeed sent back to Mexico, just before his final exploits. His brother sent him there with the message, 'do not return'. The Mexican government was said to have enlisted Tiburcio for the army. He fled back to California and immediately back into trouble. It was at this that Refugio trailed him into California. Neither would return to Mexico. In that Tiburcio's immediate family records were sealed; we have not been able to prove the connection. Although,  as late as 1940 my family was said to have been "from the bad Vasquez blood"- presumably from Tiburcio and his reputation. My uncle, Julio Vasquez, said that his grandfather told him that our family was originally from Spain, coming up through Columbia and into Mexico prior to coming into California on the De Anza Expedition. Pregunta 357 - 2 May 2006

I don't even know where to begin.  I am a descendent of the Chavez family whom where given the land grant for Chavez Ravine.  I've always considered this to be one of the most fascinating facts of my background.  From what I understand, the land was sold by the Chavez family during the drought in the 1800s in order to secure water rights for their cattle.  In past years, I've had trouble researching the history of Chavez Ravine from the time it was given to my ancestors until the time they sold it.  I suppose I'm just looking for something comprehensive.Thanks.

The Chavez was my dad's grandmother's...she married a Spencer...I'd like to hear from any of my other long lost relatives out there!.  gumbiecat@cox.net [Lauren Spencer (nonmember), Tucson, Ariz.]

Pregunta 356 - 2 May 2006

Alondus De Lafayette Buckland and Nancy Laura Aldrich married in Mission Dolores in Fall of 1846.  They were members of the Brannan party that arrived on the ship "Brooklyn".  Any information appreciated, but especially desire marriage records, if possible. [G-g-g-daughter, Colleen Sullivan (nonmember), Sierra Vista, Ariz.]

Pregunta 355 - 2 May 2006

I am trying to find if any mission records exist from the Mission San Jose De Comondu in Baja California Sur? If these records exist, how may I access them? I understand that the Spanish families spent the summer months in Comondu to escape the hot weather of Loreto. My great, great, great grandfather, Jose Raymundo Estrada was from that area. [Thornton Jenkins de Estrada (member), Sonoma, Calif.]

Pregunta 354 - 21 April 2006

I am sending this to you, I don't know who is the appropriate address to contact. I am under contract with the University of Arizona Press for a biography of Juana Briones y Tapia de Miranda, and do not have a photo of her. If one ever does arise in anyone's collection, I'd be pleased to know of it. Ernie Miramontes once gave me a family photo with an old woman in it he thought was Juana, but that proved to be unlikely. Guadalupe Briones y Tapia de Miramontes was Juana's sister.  [Jeanne Farr McDonnell (member), Palo Alto, Calif.]

Respuesta a Pregunta 354 - 7 September 2006

I am the great great grandson of Juana Briones de Miranda. Her daughter
Narcissa married Jesus Garcia and their second son, Jesus Pedro, was my
grandfather.  I have a lot of information regarding this family.  There
is a photo of her likeness based on the description of Tom Mesa, another
grandson, found in the book Los Altos Hills by Florence M Fava. Mrs.
Fava includes an entire chapter to Señora Briones de Miranda.
I would be very interested in a biography of my great great grandmother, whenever
it is completed. Thank you [Patrick Garcia (nonmember), Spokane, Wash.]

Pregunta 353 - 21 April 2006

I have found reference to a daughter of Joseph Antonio Alvitre named Maria del Refugio having married one Ramon Ubaze in Mission  San Carlos de Monterey, CA, 22 February 1864.    I can find no reference to any Ubaze in the census records or the surname on any site.    Do you have access to the Mission San Carlos marriage records and can you verify this name?  Does this marriage record reflect parents of Ramon Ubaze or any children for Ramon and Maria del Refugio?   Thanks you for your assistance. [Antonia (nonmember), state of Georgia]

Respuesta a Pregunta 353 - 21 April 2006

From the Thomas W. Temple Abstracts [CD] I find the following, which cites his parents as Irenco Ubaze and Martina Vasquez. I searched the Mission San Carlos sections, but found no reference to either Ramon's or Maria's birth or death or the birth or death of any children they may have had. Perhaps their stay at San Carlos was relatively short. [Benita Gray (member), San Diego, Calif.]

"Feb 22, 1864- RAMON UBAZE, 33, h.l. de Irenco y Martina Vasquez, with REFUGIO ALVITRE, 19, h.l. de Antonio y Concepcion Amesquita. Jacobo Primer Leese, wit. Comellas"

Pregunta 352 - 21 April 2006

Pregunta:  "on November 16, 1847, in the Church of the City of Los Angeles, Don Juán Bautista Bouett, born in France--30 years of age, son of Don Agustín Antonio de Bouett and Doña Maria Cota--married Doña Maria Loreta Cota, daughter of deceased Guillermo Cota and Manuela Nieto, neighbors of this City.  Witnesses Luciano Valdez 'y ótros varios'."  The lineage of Loreta Cota is well-known; does anyone have any other references to Juán Bouett?  I find him in the 1850 and 1860 U.S. Federal Censuses for Los Angeles, but I have nothing else, except a reference to a 'lot on Main Street about a hundred feet south of Third Street, running from Main to Spring Street' that 'Juan Bouvette and his wife Loreta Cota' sold to 'Remundo Alexander, a French sailor', who married María Valdez. [CHSQ 13:331] [Lawrence Bouett (member), Lafayette, Calif.]

Pregunta 351 - 7 April 2006

Do you have any information on Dr. James Stokes who arrived in Monterey in 1833? Does anyone have a photo or drawing of this man? [Gary Munsinger (nonmember), Monterey, Calif.]

Respuesta a Pregunta 351 - 1 July 2009

I tried finding information on Jose Maria Sanchez purchasing the "James Stokes" adobe in 1834 and could find no evidence.  However I did find at the following web site :  http://www.monterey.org/focus/spring04/historybuffs.html  that he bought the "Santiago Stokes" adobe in 1843 and that today it is part of the City Council's office.  Does anyone have any hard evidence (i.e. land records) that show he purchased the "Santiago Stokes" adobe? [Pam Parsons (member), San Luis Obispo, Calif.]

Respuesta a Pregunta 351 - 2 May 2006

For those outside of Monterey, in Monterey the Stokes adobe still stands. It is a restaurant now, and pretty good at that. Teresa Russell, you were looking for some things for me. [James T. Larson (member), El Paso de Robles, Calif.]

Respuesta a Pregunta 351 - 21 April 2006

Dr. James Stokes married Maria Josepha Soto, and she was granted Capay Rancho. Rancho Vergeles was granted to James C. Stokes, patented 8,760 acres. In 1834 Don Jose Maria Sanchez bought James Stoke's adobe in Monterey. [Teresa Russell y Espinosa de Boronda (nonmember), Long Beach, Calif.].
