Vicenta Gutierrez (Gutierres, Gutieres) lived at or near San Carlos Mission between 1833-1847 (maybe earlier and possibly later as well, but definitely during the tenure of Padre Jose Maria del Refugio Sagrado Suarez, aka Padre Real). She was described as a girl or young woman around 1840ish. Her brother was called "El Huero," and his father was known as Joaquin Gutierrez. Joaquin was said to be married to or living with an Indian woman named Josefa (Chepa) Real around this time period, too (but she's not Vicenta's mother). Joaquin may have been a Spanish soldier married to an Indian woman. I have found a Joaquin Gutierrez married to Maria Josefa Perfect at San Carlos in 1839, ages 23 and 16 respectively; however, this makes them too young to be Vicenta's parents. Any help with this search is welcome. [Deborah Miranda (nonmember), Lexington, Virginia]
I am searching for information about Cpt. Nepomuseno Espinosa and his wife Brigida Marron: my great, great, great grandparents. They were in Baja California in the late 1700s. Brigida was from Andalusia, Spain. Their daughter, Maria Perfetta Espinosa married Jesse Julian Ames. I am also seeking information about Francisco Serrano and his wife, Maria Valenzuela Silvas. They were in San Diego in 1782. Any information about Raphael Marron, who was in San Diego in 1879 would also be greatly appreciated. [Samuel Ames (nonmember), Providence, Rhode Island]
Brigida Marron was the wife of Juan Jose Espinosa, a colonial soldier who retired in 1811 and was given land around La Paz, Baja California Sur. Their son may have been Juan Nepomuceno Espinosa, who was in Baja California Norte in 1828. He married a Cochimi/Kumiai Indian, Loreto Castro. They were the parents of Maria Perfecta Espinosa, wife of Julian Ames. This information comes from Pablo Martínez, Guía Familiar de Baja California, and from Alejandro Espinoza, a historian in Ensenada, Baja California. [Rondi Frankel (nonmember), Mexico City]
I am writing about San Luis Gonzaga Misión in Baja. I have just found a lot of descendents of Alférez Real Fernando de la Toba and his wife, Teresa Verduzco de Fernandez. If you want more information, please, contact us, to the e-mail below. He died on his own ranch, Los Dolores, close to San Luis Gonzaga. [Fernando Murillo-López (nonmember), Cd. Constitución Baja California México : fernando_murillolopez@hotmail.com.mx] Note: I do not know if any of this family came to Alta California, but I did not want to take a chance of depriving a descendant of some needed information. Just started looking into the Larios genealogy. Did, however, have contact with Tony Larios of California several years ago while in Oklahoma. He suspected lineage. Read book Dons of California and my uncle is spitting image of Manuel -- and also named Manuel. Dad's family from Spain and migrated to Mexico to the Guanaquato area, but supposedly had brother in California. Just looking to connect with some one that has been doing work on family. I am looking for the birthplace, baptism, and death records for a Manuel Ybarra who married a Chumash Native American , Maria de la Luz, who was from Santa Rosa Island and baptized at the Santa Ynez Mission in August 1843. Manuel Ybarra was born around 1840 and the Santa Barbara census of 1880 (page 46, supervisor's district 4, enumeration district 821) that he was born in Cala (California???) but it doesn't say what city of his birth. Nor that he was Native American or not. Can anyone be of any help in this matter? I appreciate any help that anyone has to offer in providing information regarding this matter. I am searching for birth records for Prudencia Rufina Ruiz, born 28 April 28 1860 in Rancho Los Alamitos, California. Her parents were Jose Guadalupe Ruiz and Maria Ascension Olivares. She married Francisco Bracamontes. If anyone has it or any information about it, I would appreciate a copy. [Ray Bracamontes, deebrac@sbcglobal.net (nonmember), Anaheim, Calif.]
Can anyone tell me if the city of Moraga, California was actually named for the/a Moraga family? If so, where would I find a genealogy of that Moraga family? [Carolyn Storm (nonmember), Calif.]
According to CALIFORNIA PLACE NAMES, A Geographical Dictionary by Erwin G. Gudde, "Moraga: Valley, settlement (Contra Costa). Preserves the name of Joaquin Moraga, a soldier in the San Francisco Company in 1819 and in 1835 co-grantee of the Laguna de los Palos Colorados grant. He was the son of the better-known Gabriel Moraga." [Patricia Grisotti (member), Sedro Wooley, Wash.]
Could anyone help me with the Carlon family. There was Jose Maria Carlon, born 13 July 1812 at Santa Barbara. This is all I was told of him. He married Maria Antonia Bermudez who was also a native of Santa Barbara. I know they had a Jose Marcelino Carlon born 10 January 1838 in Santa Barbara and a daughter Adelaida Carlon born in Santa Barbara, but she died at San Luis Obispo Thanks for the help. I last contacted you in 2004 and hope maybe some new eyes will help me find this information. I am looking for a John Melville from the Aptos area married to Maria Francisca Castro y Gonzales, granddaughter to Rafael Castro and Solidad Cota. Her mother was Adelayda Castro who was married to Luis Gonzales. Luis was son of Francisco Gonzales. John and Francisca married in 1868. I have quite a bit of history about the Castros, but I am desiring to know where the heck John came from prior to his marriage to Francisca. The Castro family book only refers to him as "John Melville the Englishman". And, by the way, the Castro book that refers to my Grandfather Melville allegedly stealing money from Rafael is very, very mistaken. At any rate, has anyone run into any other information regarding John and his family? Thank you in advance for any help. [Melody Melville (nonmember), Commerce, Texas]
Hi I'm a Castro relative and have met other relative from the Salinas/Santa Rita, California area. I don't know the answer to your question, but I might have found someone who does. I'm one of Maria Soledad cota and Raphael Castro great great granddaughters. My e-mail address is abergstrom@nc.rr.com. Please contact me anytime there. Thank you, [Sarah (nonmember), North Carolina]
Can anyone help with the family of Rafael Bayse and Maria Antonia Albitre. I understood there were two brothers, Rafael and James Bayse who married two Albitre sisters: Rafael who married Maria Antonia del Espiritu Albitre and James Bayse who married her sister - do not know which one, or if this is even true. They were daughters of Anastacio Albitre and Eleuteria Verdugo. Thanks for the help. Please email me at - johnalbitre@sbcglobal.net - but please, also post your response on Los Californianos "queries" so all may share in your response. Thanks so much, [John Albitre (member), Bakersfield, Calif.]
Searching for hometown for Sofia Oviedo who was born in Mexico, about 1858. Sofia married into the Elizalde family and resided in Los Nietos, California, most of her life. Sofia is probably the mother of Dolores Elizalde who married Epifanio Romero of Los Nietos, CA. Their son Ephraim Romero (the boxer) changed his name to Bert Colima. Thank you. I am looking for my ancestors. My grandfather, Lamberto Berrellez, was born in La Colorada, Sonora, sometime around the late 1800s. It has been rumored that he is related to the Berrelleza family that migrated with Juan Bautista de Anza that founded San Francisco, California. Please respond. Thanks [Raul Gonzales Berrellez (nonmember), Tucson, Ariz.]
Commenting on Pregunta 479 and the link to a Berryessa Family site [on Links page]. This is a nice site, filled with a lot of interesting information. I was able to independently verify much of the vital statistics from the Early California Population Project, although I found a few discrepancies in some minor details. For example, Nicolas and Maria Gertrudis' son Nicolas Antonio was born in 1789, not 1787. Nicolas' second wife after Maria Gertrudis was Maria Ignacia, not Ignacio. In text, there is a mention that Sisto, son of Nasario, married Nicolasa Higuera in Santa Clara, when the ceremony actually took place at Mission San Francisco Solano. This is correctly reported in Sixto's family tree entry, however. Another son of Nasario is identified as Ramon Juan who married Evangelista. Actually, this boy was baptized Ramon Juan Evangelista according to the mission records. Nasario's child listed as Antonia Maria actually was a boy Antonio Maria, described in the records as a "parvulo." And finally, the birth and baptism information on Nasario's daughter Maria Ynes seems to be compressed together. ECPP reports that she was baptised on 2 August 1829 when she was 2 days old, so her birthday would have been July 31, not August 31. Despite these small details that need correcting, I want to compliment Betty Howard, who put this site together, on the research she has done, the interesting family stories she has compiled, and the attractive presentation she has made of all this information. Font and Anza both list Nicolas and Maria Isabella, although their ages and full names do not correspond in all listings. The names are spelled differently and sometimes have many middle name variations. I am a Berryessa or Berrellezza and it is found that they joined the expedition in Tubac. They were the only unmarried members not attached to a family. They are the direct relatives of those who had ranch land near Putah Creek in Sonoma area--losing most of the land in gambling. My direct relative was the first white or European woman born in the Santa Clara Mission. She is buried north of Woodland, California. There is a winery nearby called Berryessa, They just used the name, but are not relations. Nicolas married Maria Peralta and they had many children. One was Clara, my direct relative. Maria died in 1805 and is buried in the Mission plot along with her husband Nicolas. Maria Isabella died earlier and is buried in the San Francisco Presidio plot. She had no children but had a husband who was killed by Indians one year before she died. I will post our family history which is outlined in a Web site later. [Kendall Langan (nonmember), Moraga, Calif.]
The Berrellezas that came with Anza would be Nicolas Antonio Berreyesa (son of Cayetano Berreyesa and Nicolas Leyba) and his sister, Maria Isabel Berreyesa. Nicolas was born about 1761 at Villa de Sinaloa, Sinaloa, Mexico. The surname has many variations in spelling. Information is from Marie Northrop's Spanish-Mexican Families of Early California 1769-1850, vol. I, pp. 76-78. [Benita Gray (member), San Diego, Calif.]
