Pregunta 518 - 12 July 2008

I would like information about the ancestors of Felipe Goicoechea (Goycoechea), 1st or 2nd commander of Presidio Santa Barbara, as my husband's line descends from his sister Juana Lorenza Goicoechea. I have the names of their parents, but would like to know if anyone has researched beyond them. I am interested in securing a copy of a portrait of Felipe -- any suggestions. Thank you, [Misty (nonmember), San Jose, Calif.]

Respuesta a Pregunta 518 - 12 July 2008

According to Citadel on the Channel by Richard S. Whitehead, p. 100: "Governor Neve lost no time in arranging for a replacement of Lt. Ortega as commander at Santa Barbara. Don Felipe Antonio de Goycoechea was promoted from alferez (ensign) to lieutenant January 14, 1783, with orders to assume command of the Santa Barbara Company. For various reasons, the actual takeover did not occur for another year." That would make Felipe the 2nd commander of the presidio. Whitehead goes on to say he was of Basque descent, born in 1747 in the Real de Cosalá, a small town ninety miles southeast of Culiacán in the province of Sinaloa. The book tells quite more about his military life, but only speculation on his ancestry. [Benita H. Gray (member), San Diego, Calif.]

Pregunta 515 - 14 June 2008

I wish to know who were the brothers and sons of Santiago Arguello (my great great great grandfather), and which members resettled in Guadalajara, Jalisco. Did any of them have children? [Carlita Manson (nonmember), Coronado, Calif.]

Respuesta a Pregunta 515 - 14 June 2008

The following information is from Marie Northrop's Spanish-Mexican Families of Early California:1769-1850, vol. I, pp. 44-. Santiago Arguello's brothers were: Joseph Ygnacio Maximo, Luis Antonio, Jose Gervasio, and Francisco Rafael Toribio de Jesus. Their father, Joseph Dario Arguello, died in Guadalajara about 1827-28 and their mother, Maria Ygnacia Moraga, was buried there, 13 April 1829. Jose Gervasio married Maria Encarnacion Dolores Bernal and they had 3 daughters and a son. All were baptized at Mission Dolores. Jose was sent to Mexico as habilitado general and never returned to Alta California. He served as supplente in congress in 1827-28; retired in 1834; and probably died in Guadalajara. Luis Antonio married first Maria Rafaela Antonia Sal and they had two sons baptized at Mission Dolores. He married second Maria de la Soledad Ortega and they had 4 daughters and one son, all baptized at Mission Dolores. Luis' biography can be found in Bancroft's History of California, Vol. III, pp. 9-13. [Benita Gray (member), San Diego, Calif.]

Pregunta 513 - 14 June 2008

I am trying to locate information surrounding Francisco Serrano, born 1744 in Sastago, Zaragoza, Spain. Specifically, I want to learn more about how he and others circa 1762 would have been recruited from this area of Spain into the Spanish Army. What would have been compelling reasons for himself and others to leave their families and their homeland of Sastago? I do have material on Francisco and his descendents in Southern California, but I more interested in any records during his time in Sastago. I can be reached at ralphoaxaca@tcbk.com  and ralphoaxaca@aol.com , and cell # 209 617 3198 [Ralph Serrano Oaxaca (nonmember), Calif.]  [Please copy responses to the Web site or gray850@aol.com as I am sure others will be interested. Pregunta 512 - 14 June 2008

I am looking for information on the Carrillo Family.  The children I have are Soledad, Rosenda, Jose Maria, Jose Luis & Felipe.  All the children were baptized at San Gabriel around 1849 to 1850, except Felipe he was baptized at Pala.  The parents noted are Doroteo and Maria Gallardo.  I have researched the Gallardo family back to Los Angeles.     Rosenda married Victor Samaniego both living at Pala and married on 26 August 1874.  Soledad Carrillo married Trinidad Acosta and they had a daughter Serafina born 24 June 1877.  I don't know who Jose Maria Carrillo married. Jose Luis married Refugio Llanes ( my great great grandparents) on 28 October 1978 in Pala by the San Juan Capistrano priest.  I know there is more family out there and I would love to meet and share genealogy.  My grandmother and her sisters lived at Pala and  have been searching for their family since the early 1940s and the search has been continued since by other family members.  The girls' parents both died when my grandmother Refugio was only 15 and she has since passed.  I would love to find more information if anyone knows about any of the kids or names.  Every little bit helps and opens new doors. [Lisa (nonmember), Chula Vista, Calif.]

Pregunta 511 - 5 June 2008

I am looking for information about the parents and grandparents  of Rosa Ann Barrios y Estrada who was married to Federico Estrada. Rose's mother was  Celsa (Maria Antonia Celsa Hernandez born 1842 California)  and Luis Barrios (born 1820 in Mexico) was her father.  I know very little about them.  Celsa's parents were Pomposa Flores (born 1842 in California; died 1857 Santa Barbara) and Olayo Hernandez (born 1805 Penjamo, Guanajuato, Mex.; died 1872 San Luis Obispo).  I have some information that Pomposa and Olayo had daughters named Maria Pomposa de Refugio, Maria Polonia de las Mercedes, Maria Juana Estrefana, and Macaria Hernandez, who married Benito Ubiedo.   Does anyone have any information to enlighten me on any of these people?  I'm particularly interested in knowing if they had native American blood.   Thanks in advance.  [Candi Estrada (nonmember), Seattle, Wash.]

Respuesta a Pregunta 511 - 19 November 2008

Candi, my great-grandmother is Macaria Hernandez, married to Benito Ubiedo (or Ovieda).  I'm away from the genealogy chart just now, but if you are still interested, let me know.  Too bad my mom, Madgel Miranda, passed away in 2001 - she lived in Seattle!  [Deborah Miranda (nonmember), Lexington, Virginia]
