Pregunta 540 - 26 December 2008

José Pérez Fernández (born at Da Ponte, Lorenzo, 15 November 1749) joined the Army in 1762 and was in the Spanish Dragoons for 16 years. Spent one year at Loreto Presidio then to the Presidio of San Francisco in 1792 when he was at the Presidio of San Francisco and was acting commandant with Hermenegildo Sal while José Argüello was in Monterey. Lt. José Pérez Fernández returned to Loreto, 1798, and then I can place him again at Loreto in 1820.  Can you till me any more about him?

Juan Prado Mesa was born May 1806 in Santa Clara, Alta California. He had been a soldier at the San Francisco Presidio since 1828, served as a corporal in the Santa Clara Guard. In 1835 Vallejo removed his company to Sonoma, leaving Juan Prado Mesa in charge of San Francisco’s Presidio. Juan Prado Mesa was wounded in an Indian fire in 1838, granted a Rancho in 1839 and died in 1845 from his wounds. Can you till me when he joined the army,  what the wounds were that caused his death so many years later? [Marcus Combs (not yet a member), Presidio of San Francisco California]

Pregunta 539 - 26 December 2008

Can anyone assist me in with information regarding my family tree, my great-great-great grandfather was Francisco Albanez who married Maria Anontia Ybarra. He was a sea captain and they settled in San Timeteo Canyon in the mid 1800s. He was given a land grant, Rancho Albanez. There were nine children, who married people with surnames Sweeny, Griffen, Coe. I have a Native Daughters of the Golden West certificate , giving Francisco's date of birth as 1801, but have documentation from the Patriots and Near Patriots of Northwestern New Spain, page 4 that paid Francisco Albanez's expenses for a trip from San Blas in 1778. I would appreciate any information. My email is TEALBANEZ@aol.com . I forgot to mention, of the nine children I am related to Epifanio Albanez. [Thomas Albanez (nonmember), Venice, Florida] Note: I am sure others are interested in this information so, if possible, please cc this Web site. La Tejedora

Pregunta 537 - 26 December 2008

Can anyone tell me what happened to Josef Manuel Valencia and his wife on the trip to Alta California in 1776?  The records say only one person died, but I find no proof that Valencia and his wife made it to California.   His daughters are listed the next year as orphans living with godparents, Xavier Beltran and his wife.   Thank you [Beca (nonmember)]

Respuesta a Pregunta 537 - 26 December 2008

Marie Northrop's Spanish-Mexican Families of Early California 1769-1850, vol. II, p. 293 says Joseph Manuel Valencia was buried 30 August 1788 at Mission Santa Clara and that his wife, Maria de la  Luz Munoz was buried 21 December 1776 at Mission Dolores (first burial). Pregunta 536 - 19 November 2008

I am praying that someone will know of a Ludovina (last name unknown) who married a (first name unknown) Higuera. They were born in California in the 1830s. They appear in the 1880 census, but his name is hard to make out. Ludovina was the grandmother of a Berryessa descendant I am working on, and "holds the key" to connecting him to his parents (as I have no clue who they might be right now). ANY information is welcome on them. I've stressed most internet sources, now I need to see if anyone has anything specific in their databases on this couple. Many thanks!!! [Anthony Ray (nonmember), Palmdale, Calif.]

Pregunta 535 - 19 November 2008

I am a descendant of Jose Manuel Higuera. Higuera were part of 1774 expedition. They were from Villa de Sinaloa. Later, about 1777 they were early settlers. My great grandmother Alta Gracia Higuera was born at Tres Pinos , Alta California, Mexico in 1840 and died at Tres Pinos, California, U.S.A. in 1946. She was 106 when she died. I was 7 years old in 1946. In Woodland, California there are hundreds of descendants of Alta Gracia Higuera.   If any family or other folks that have knowledge of this part of the Higuera family read this, please e-mail me at apodaca@pacbell.net .   I would like very much to speak with you. I am trying to finish a book I am working on concerning the family's historic past and  and its modern day American history. [Arthur J. Apodaca, J.D. (nonmember), Guinda, Calif.]

Respuesta a Pregunta 531 - 19 October 2008

Francisco Gilbert was born in Murcia, Spain about 1800. He was married 6 January1828 to Maria Julia De La Luz Lopez. They had seven children that I could find. The first child was named Ramona Rafaela Juana Gilbert. She married Felipe Santiago De La Cruz Arellanes 14 October 1846 at Mission Santa Inez. They had six children that I could find. Felipe was my great great uncle. I have other information on the Arellanes family if it will be of help to you. I'm also looking for Inez Shakman who has a lot of information on the Arellanes family. Long ago I had an E-mail address for her, but it didn't work. If she sees this message, please contact me. And you Teresa, I need your help! You never answered my E-mail. [James T.
