Gail, I think I can help. My maiden name is Aguayo. I've researched the Turners & Aguayos that lived in Azusa and had big ranches. It was a big family. I've researched Aguayo, Turner, Estrada, Ruelas who resided in Azusa and had lots of land there. Isabel's parents were John C. Turner and Placida Ruelas Turner. She had a brother named Dionicio and a sister named Mary....also half brothers and sisters. I'd be glad to share if you contact me. Please get in touch with me...and we'll se what we can do. I am looking for information and ancestors of Francis Leyva born 14 May 1839 Mexico to Ignacia Leyva de Valenzuela and Manuel de Leiva from Sinaloa, Mexico. Manuel's parents were Don Justo de Leyva who married Joseffa De Girardo. They walked up through the Missions around 1847 to Mission San Jose where Francis met and married Calvin Martin. If anyone can help with information where we might find our ancestry we would be so appreciative. Thank you, [Erin Menard (nonmember), San Jose, Calif.]
I am also a descendent of Francis (Francesca) & Calvine Martin. Their daughter, Nancy, is my great grandmother. I am starting a family tree and would like to know more. nancia@ashbrook.net [Nanci Adler (nonmember), Carlsbad, Calif.]
I recently had the opportunity to go to Santa Barbara and do as much research as I could on Jose Calixto (Calisto) Ayala, I have lots of family information on Ayalas tracing back to him. What I am looking for is personal information about Jose Calixto Ayala and where to find it. If my gathered information is correct, it seems he was an 11-13 year-old boy when he came to Santa Barbara. We are having an 80 Birthday for my father, Harry J. Ayala and would like to gather as much information as possible. Most of my descendants are still in the the area, south to Thousand Oaks. [Carlos Ayala (nonmember), Orem, Utah]
This states that Jose Calixto was a soldier in Anza's 1774 expedition. If this is true, he would only have been 13-14 years old. I can find nothing in the Anza expedition history to list Ayala's name. Do you know of such a record? I have been searching for years to find an early record for Ayala. The earliest record I can find for him is his marriage in Santa Barbara. Thanks, [Lorraine Moffat (member). Hesperia, Calif.] No, I do not. Benita Gray
According to Marie Northrop's Spanish-Mexican Families of Early California: 1769-1850, vol. II, pp. 16-18: Jose Calixto Ayala was born about 1763 at Real de Cozala, Sinaloa, Mexico of Nicolas Ayala and Maria Ygnacia. He married Juana Maria Vitala Feliz [born about 1773 at Real de Cozala of Juan Victorino Feliz and Micaela Landera; buried 2 August 1840 at Mission Santa Barbara] 3 December 1786 at Santa Barbara Presidio. They had 13 children, all baptized at Mission Santa Barbara. He was a soldier in Anza's 1774 Expedition. Theirs was the first marriage of gente de razon at Mission Santa Barbara. H was invalido (retired) at Santa Barbara in 1832. In 1834 he was a hachero (woodcutter) at Santa Barbara.
According to Richard Whitehead's Citadel on the Channel: "According to the presidio marriage register, the first marriage solemnized at the presidio was performed in the building used as the guardhouse because the (palisade) presidio chapel threatened to collapse." I am looking for information on the Yanez or Peters families. Viviana Yanez was married to Telefilo Peters and was the sister to my great great great grandmother, Trinidad Silvas Yanez. Trinidad was married to Remijio Yanez. I would like to know who Viviana's and Trinidad's parents were. Remijio Yanez is the oldest identified grave in the original Pala Indian Cemetery, yet anyone we ask has no idea who he was. I am sure it is do to all the political and money hungry people out there. This information is wanted strictly for family history as my grandmother and her sisters lived at Pala, but where then orphaned. Later they returned to visit family and friends. But my grandmother and her sisters and my mother passed before we could get all our questions answered. [Lisa White (nonmember), Chula Vista, Calif.]
My great grandmother was Tomasa Garcia de Moreno. I have several pictures of the entire family that my great aunt Q.P or Felicia Moreno gave me. They are very old old portraits and I would love to share them. [Barbara (nonmember), San Diego, Calif.]
My great grandmother was also Tomasa Moreno. My grandmother was Irene Moreno de Gutierrez and her daughter, Evangeline, is my mother. Aunt Felicia Stepka was also a member of Los Californianos until she passed at age 105 in El Cajon. I have done grandmother Tomasa's family history in Early California. Yes, please contact me regarding the pictures. [Lorri Frain (member), Mountain View, Calif.]

I'm searching for family information on Jose CASTRO and the connection to the PALMER family. These CASTROs were from San Juan Bautista and I believe Jose was Governor during the 1840 - 1850s era. Jose had a son, Esteban CASTRO. I have not found the PALMER connection yet. I believe PALMER may have married into Jose CASTROs family - perhaps a sister to Jose or Esteban? My information is based on a letter Jose CASTRO sent to J.B. ALVARADO on 24 December 1856 stating that he was hoping to borrow 200 pesos from PALMER to help his son Esteban on his travels to Sacramento. Thanks. [Jennifer Pierce (nonmember), Elk Grove, Calif.]
We are searching for descendants of the Hernandez brothers, Mariano and Pedro who owned the Rancho Del Puerto, specifically a Mr. George R. Hernandez who may now be deceased but lived in the Fremont, Calif. area. The history of the town of Patterson, Calif. begins with the measuring of the Rancho Del Puerto and the subsequent grant of the land to Mariano and Pedro Hernandez on 30 January 1844 by Manuel Micheltoreno, then Governor of the Californias. The town of Patterson is celebrating it's centennial this year and we are trying to find any descendants who might link back to the two Hernandez brothers. Please contact me at Sheila-ann@Juno.com . Thanks! [Sheila Ruiz Harrell (member), Modesto, Calif.]
I am trying to locate a photo of the chapel that was built by Rafael Castro in 1876 in the city of Aptos. It was named Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. The chapel was demolished in 1930 and mentioned in the Sentinel and the Pajaronian but neither included a photo of the chapel. [Marie (nonmember), Santa Cruz, Calif.]
I am completing a pictorial history of the mid-Alameda County region for the Arcadia Publishing Series "Images of America," and I would much like to secure an image or line illustration of Barbara castro Soto. Her brother was Guillermo Castro and her husband was Francisco Soto. She was one of the few women who owned a Spanish land grant and was named as the sole owner. Do you have any leads on where I might find something? I have worked with Bancroft, the local historical society, and done rather extensive primary source research. But, to no avail. Thanks for your consideration of this request.-- María Ochoa, PhD San José State University Department of Social Science Women's Studies Program Telephone: 408-924-5591 professor.ochoa@gmail.com
I would like to find out the location of origin in Spain of the Soberanes Family of Salinas and Monterey Calif. I am part of the family and have developed an interest in the family history because I was recently in Spain and was wondering what part of Spain my family ( on my mother's side) came from. If you have any clues or suggestions where I could get this information I would be grateful. Thanks, [Douglas Moler [nonmember], California]
